SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:18–30: It is hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom

The theme of this section is similar in some ways to the theme of the preceding section. In both sections Jesus talked about entering the kingdom of God. This section also contrasts with the preceding one. In that section the children represent humble people who easily depend on God and welcome his rule/reign. The ruler in this section represents people who are rich and powerful. It is very difficult for such people to welcome God’s reign and submit to it.

The ruler asked Jesus how he could obtain eternal life. Jesus told him to obey God’s commands. Among the Jews, this was a well-known answer to the question of how to obtain eternal life. The ruler said that he had obeyed God’s commands since he was a child. Then Jesus told him to sell what he had, give the money to the poor, and become his disciple. But the ruler valued his riches too much to do that. Then Jesus said that it is very hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom.

At the end of the section Jesus promised that people who left their possessions and family behind to serve him would receive great rewards.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught that riches make it difficult to obtain eternal life

A Rich Man’s Question (NCV)

The rich young man (NJB)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 19:16–30 and Mark 10:17–31.

18:29a

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied,

Truly I tell you: Jesus also used this phrase at 18:17. Here the phrase emphasizes what Jesus was about to say to the disciples in 18:29b–30b. Other ways to translate it are:

I assure you that… (GNT)

I can promise you that…

I can guarantee this truth: (GW)

For more suggestions, see the notes on 18:17a.

Jesus replied: In the Greek text, this clause occurs before the words “Truly I tell you.” Place it where it is most natural in your language.

18:29b–30a

no one who has left…will fail to receive: The phrase no one who has left…will fail to receive is an emphatic way to say “anyone who has left…will certainly receive.” For example:

Anyone who gave up his home, wife, brothers, parents, or children…will certainly receive many times as much in this life… (GW)

18:29b

“no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children

18:29c

for the sake of the kingdom of God

18:29b–c

has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God: Here Jesus implied that sometimes his disciples must leave their homes and families in order to serve God and his kingdom. In this context, leaving family members probably implies being away from them for a long time. Jesus’ disciples did this when they left their families to travel with Jesus. Sometimes people may also have to leave their family members in order to become people in God’s kingdom. This is especially true when family members oppose Jesus.

Some other ways to translate this are:

has left behind their homes or wives or brothers or parents or children in order to serve God as his king

has given up his home, wife, brothers, parents, or children to submit to God as his king

home: The Greek word that the BSB translates as home can refer to any house. It can also refer to the family members who live in a person’s house.

brothers or parents or children: The word brothers includes all siblings, older and younger, male and female. The word parents refers to both mother and father. The word children refers to a person’s sons and daughters. Use appropriate kinship terms in your language.

uW Translation Notes:

ἀμὴν, λέγω ὑμῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς ἐστίν ὅς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν ἤ γυναῖκα ἤ ἀδελφούς ἤ γονεῖς ἤ τέκνα ἕνεκεν τῆς Βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Jesus says this to emphasize the importance of what he is about to say. Alternate translation: [I can assure you]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐδείς ἐστιν ὃς ἀφῆκεν

no_one (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς ἐστίν ὅς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν ἤ γυναῖκα ἤ ἀδελφούς ἤ γονεῖς ἤ τέκνα ἕνεκεν τῆς Βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ)

A double negative statement begins in this verse and concludes in the next verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the entire double negative statement as a positive statement. Alternate translation, beginning here: [anyone who has left]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἵνεκεν τῆς Βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς ἐστίν ὅς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν ἤ γυναῖκα ἤ ἀδελφούς ἤ γονεῖς ἤ τέκνα ἕνεκεν τῆς Βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ)

See how you decided to translate the phrase the kingdom of God in [4:43](../04/43.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun kingdom with a verb such as “rule.” Alternate translation: [in order to allow God to rule over his life]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:18-30 The story of the rich religious leader warns against trusting in riches rather than pledging complete allegiance to God.

OET (OET-LV)And he said to_them:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all that there_is no_one who left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, on_account the kingdom of_ the _god,

OET (OET-RV)I can assure you all,” Yeshua responded, “that no one who left their home or spouse or siblings, or parents or children on account of God’s kingdom

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
