SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:31–34: Jesus again predicted his death

Jesus had told his disciples in 9:22 and 9:44 that people would kill him and that he would rise from the dead after three days. In this section Jesus again told the disciples that these things would happen to him. This time he gave more details about how these events would happen.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Again Predicts His Death (NIV)

Jesus continues his journey toward suffering and death in Jerusalem

Refer to your section title for Section 9:43b–45. If you used a phrase that means “the second time” there, you should use a phrase that means “the third time” here. For example:

For the Third Time Jesus Foretells That He Will Die and Come Back to Life (GW)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 20:17–19 and Mark 10:32–34.

18:34

This verse has three statements with very similar meanings. The statements indicate that the disciples did not understand the meaning of what Jesus had just said. They did not know what he meant when he referred to his suffering and death in 18:32–33. They did not seem to expect that Jesus would physically suffer and die. They may have thought that he was speaking in a figurative way about his death.

See the General Comment on 18:34a–c at the end of 18:34c for suggestions about combining some of the clauses. There is also an example of using idioms to express the fact that the disciples did not understand.

18:34a

But the disciples did not understand any of these things.

But: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Some English versions, such as the KJV, translate it that way. The BSB and many other versions translate it as But in order to show that it introduces a contrast. Other versions, such as the NIV and CEV, do not translate this conjunction. Connect this verse to 18:32–33 in a natural way in your language.

the disciples did not understand any of these things: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates literally as any of these things refers to what Jesus had just said in 18:32–33. Some other ways to translate the disciples did not understand any of these things are:

The apostles did not understand this… (NCV)

The apostles did not understand what Jesus was talking about. (CEV)

the disciples: The Greek word that the BSB translates as the disciples is literally “they.” Refer to them here in a natural way.

18:34b

The meaning was hidden from them,

The meaning was hidden from them: The verb was hidden is passive. In this statement it probably indicates that the meaning was very difficult for the disciples to understand. They understood the words, but they did not know what Jesus meant by them. For example:

What he said was quite obscure to them. (NJB)

What he said was a mystery to them (GW)

Some scholars suggest that the passive verb may imply that God hid the meaning from them. However, it is likely that their own expectations made it difficult for them to understand what Jesus said. No English version supplies God as the one who hid the meaning from them.

The meaning: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as The meaning is literally “this saying.” The RSV and several other English versions translate it that way. It refers to the meaning or significance of what Jesus had been saying. Other ways to translate it are:

the meaning of the words (GNT)

the significance of what he said

18:34c

and they did not comprehend what He was saying.

they did not comprehend what He was saying: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as they did not comprehend what He was saying is literally “they did not understand what was said.” Some ways to translate this are:

and they did not grasp what was said (RSV)

and they did not know what Jesus was talking about (GNT)

and they had no idea of what he meant (JBP)

General Comment on 18:34a–c

In some languages it may be more natural to have less repetition in this verse and emphasize the meaning in a different way. For example:

The disciples had no idea what Jesus meant. It was a complete mystery to them.

In many languages there are idioms to indicate that the disciples did not understand. For example:

The disciples did not get any of this. They were totally mystified, and they could not fathom/grasp what he really meant.

uW Translation Notes:

αὐτοὶ οὐδὲν τούτων συνῆκαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί οὐδέν τούτων συνῆκαν καί ἦν τό ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τά λεγόμενα)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could make the verb negative and the object positive here. Alternate translation: [they did not understand any of these things]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὐδὲν τούτων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί οὐδέν τούτων συνῆκαν καί ἦν τό ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τά λεγόμενα)

Implicitly, these things refers to Jesus’ description of how he would suffer and die in Jerusalem and then rise from the dead. Alternate translation: [none of what Jesus had told them about what was going to happen]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἦν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν

was (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί οὐδέν τούτων συνῆκαν καί ἦν τό ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τά λεγόμενα)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [God prevented them from understanding the meaning of what Jesus was telling them]

τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί οὐδέν τούτων συνῆκαν καί ἦν τό ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τά λεγόμενα)

Here Luke uses the term word in a specific sense. Alternate translation: [this saying] or [what Jesus was telling them]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὰ λεγόμενα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί οὐδέν τούτων συνῆκαν καί ἦν τό ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τά λεγόμενα)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [the things that Jesus said]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:34 The significance of his words was hidden from them: Not until after the resurrection did the disciples grasp the saving significance of Jesus’ death (see 9:45; 24:13-34).
