OET (OET-LV)And all the Youdaia region and all of_the ones_from_Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālam) was_going_out to him and they_were_being_immersed by him in the Yordanaʸs/(Yardēn) river, confessing the sins of_them.

OET (OET-RV)And many from the Yudean region and from the city of Yerushalem went out to hear him, and they confessed their sins and asked Yohan to immerse them in the Yordan river.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμεῖται πάντες

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐξεπορεύετο πρός αὐτόν πάσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καί οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται πάντες καί ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τάς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν)

Mark twice writes all as a generalization for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [most of the Judea region and most of the Jerusalemites]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐξεπορεύετο πρός αὐτόν πάσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καί οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται πάντες καί ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τάς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν)

Here, the phrase all the Judea region represents the people who live in that area. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [all the inhabitants of the Judea region]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἐξεπορεύετο

˓was˒_going_out

In a context such as this, your language might say “coming” instead of going. Alternate translation: [were coming out]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ, ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν

˱they˲_˓were_being˒_baptized by him in the Jordan river confessing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐξεπορεύετο πρός αὐτόν πάσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καί οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται πάντες καί ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τάς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν)

Here the people were confessing their sins before they were being baptized. If it would be helpful in your language, you could rearrange the elements so that these events are in sequential order, or you could use another form to indicate the sequence. Alternate translation: [confessing their sins, they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River] or [were being baptized by him in the Jordan River after they confessed their sins]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ

˱they˲_˓were_being˒_baptized by him

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [he was baptizing them]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐξομολογούμενοι

confessing

Here it is the people who are confessing, not John. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [as they confessed]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:5 All of Judea: John the Baptist created a lot of interest. It was generally believed that there had been no prophet for over 400 years, so prophets were associated with Israel’s past and with the future reign of the Messiah. John preached repentance like the ancient prophets, and he dressed like the great prophet Elijah (1:6), who was predicted to return in the last days (Mal 4:5).

OET (OET-RV)And many from the Yudean region and from the city of Yerushalem went out to hear him, and they confessed their sins and asked Yohan to immerse them in the Yordan river.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
