The author is using one person who was involved in this action of the Israelite army, David, to represent the entire army. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and David’s army killed] or [and David’s forces defeated]

The parallel passage in [1 Chronicles 19:18](../../1ch/19/18.md) reads “footsoldiers” instead of horsemen. So does the Septuagint, an ancient Greek translation. (It is possible that here in 2 Samuel and in that passage in 1 Chronicles the biblical author is mentioning one kind of soldier in order to mean soldiers in general. The UST models one way to express that meaning, which would be the same in both cases.) If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

The pronoun he refers to David and his soldiers in the first instance, and it refers to Shobach in the second instance. The pronoun his refers to Hadadezer.
