6:2 The term baptisms (or washings) is plural, so it must mean more than just Christian baptism. Instruction about various washings was prevalent in first-century Judaism (see Matt 15:2; Mark 7:3). The author might also have in mind the cleansing rituals of the Old Testament (cp. Heb 9:13; 10:22).
• The laying on of hands was associated with healing (Mark 5:22-23; Luke 13:13), ritual blessing (Matt 19:13, 15), reception of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6), and acknowledgement of a person’s ministry (Acts 6:6; 13:3).

In Section 5:11–6:12 the author interrupted his teaching about God appointing Christ as the high priest in order to tell his listeners to mature in their faith and to warn them not to stop believing in Christ. After this warning (6:4–12), he will continue to teach them in 6:13–7:28 about the priesthood of Jesus and Melchizedek.

They are taught to request to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and a…leader puts hands on their head. They are taught what will happen in the future. God will make dead people live again and he will punish forever people whose behavior is evil.
Remember that the author wants his listeners to realize that these matters are basic truths that new Christians learn. By now they should be mature enough to consider topics for believers who are ready for more advanced truths. They will continue to think about the beginning topics as needed, but they will already know the basic truths about them.

baptisms: There is a textual variant here between “teaching”/”of teaching” with the UBS going with “of teaching” but it does not seem to make any significant difference in the meaning of the verse. The Greek word for baptisms literally means “washings.” It is slightly different from the usual word used for “baptism” in the NT. Scholars interpret it in different ways in this context:
It refers to Christian baptism and other types of baptism.
the teaching about baptisms (GNT) (BSB, GNT, NIV, NRSV, CEV, GW, NCV, NET, NJB)It is difficult to be certain about which interpretation English versions follow. However, English dictionaries commonly list Christian baptism as the first meaning of “baptism,” so the use of the term “baptisms” tends to imply that there were different types of baptism.
It refers to ceremonies to make a person ritually clean. For example:

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). In Hebrews the author spoke to Jewish Christians, who knew about different types of baptism and cleansing ceremonies. They needed to be taught the meaning of Christian baptism and how it is different from other types of baptism.Cockerill (page 266) says, “One of the best suggestions is that the pastor uses the plural because he is referring to teachings that distinguish Christian baptism from various OT or contemporary Jewish washings.” The Exegetical Summary on Hebrews (Greenlee, page 190) says, “The plural implies a contrast between Christian baptism and all other religious washings known to the readers [NTC]. Instructions would be about how the cleansing by Christ’s blood, symbolized by baptism, now abrogated Jewish cleansing rites and also possibly instruction about the differences between Christian baptism, Jewish proselyte baptism, John’s baptism, and Jesus’ baptism, and the work of the Holy Spirit [EGT, Hu]”
In some languages it may be helpful to make the meaning more explicit. For example:

the laying on of hands: The action laying on of hands has a special meaning here. It refers to a Christian laying his hand or hands gently on another person (usually on his head or shoulders) to ask the Holy Spirit to come to that person. In some languages it may be necessary to use a more specific phrase. For example:

The laying on of hands was done for different purposes. At baptism, it was done to ask the Holy Spirit to be with the new believer and give him power to live for the Lord. It was also done when a person was appointed to do special work for the Lord or in order to ask for healing or for a special gift for ministry.
In some languages a phrase like laying on of hands implies a wrong meaning. For example, it may imply that a person lays hands on another person to harm him or restrain him. If that is true in your language, you may need to translate only the meaning of the action. For example:

eternal judgment: The phrase eternal judgment refers to the future time when God will judge all human beings. At that time he will make a decision about each person. His decision will determine what will happen to each one forever.

The phrase laying on of hands refers to how believers would put their hands on a fellow believer when they were commissioning him or her, praying for him or her, asking God to heal him or her, or helping him or her receive the Holy Spirit. For examples, see [Acts 8:14–17](../act/08/14.md); [Acts 13:2–3](../act/13/02.md); [Acts 28:8](../act/28/08.md); [1 Timothy 4:14](../1ti/04/14.md). In all of these situations, God uses the laying on of hands to help a fellow believer. If possible, express the idea in such a way that your readers understand the physical action and also that the action helps other believers. If it is necessary, you could include some short extra information in your translation or more information in a footnote. Alternate translation: [laying on of hands, through which God works] or [placing hands on believers]

The author uses the possessive form to speak about how a person “lays” their hands on someone else and about how the dead will “resurrect.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural form. Alternate translation: [laying hands on others and the dead resurrecting]
