Section 2:2–13: The LORD promised to punish the people of Israel

In this section, the LORD described the crisis that resulted from Israel being unfaithful to him by following other gods. He warned Israel about the punishment that he would inflict on them if they continued their unfaithfulness. There is a sharp contrast between the negative tone in this section and the positive tone in the previous one.

The first words of this section seem to be a command by Hosea to his children. He commanded them to rebuke their mother (2:2a). However, the words “declares the LORD” in 2:13c indicate that the LORD is the speaker throughout this section. The reason for this double reference is that this section has both literal and figurative meanings. Literally, it applies to the relationship between Hosea, his wife Gomer, and their children. Figuratively, it expresses the relationship between the LORD and Israel. In a complex metaphor, the nation of Israel is compared to the LORD’s wife. At the same time, the entire nation of Israel is compared to a mother, and the individual Israelites that made up the nation are compared to her children.Andersen and Freedman (pages 219–220) and Wood (page 175).

Paragraph 2:8–13

In this paragraph, Hosea continues to use the image of an adulterous wife to represent the unfaithful nation of Israel. The LORD will punish the Israelites for their worship of the false god Baal. They trusted Baal to provide for their needs instead of trusting the LORD. Similarly, Hosea will punish Gomer, because she was unfaithful to him.

The notes and translation advice in this paragraph focus mainly on the way that the LORD intends to punish Israel. So you may want to add a footnote to remind your readers that this paragraph also refers to the way that Hosea will punish his wife Gomer.

2:10a

And then I will expose her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,

Then I will remove her clothes and show her naked body to her lovers.
Soon I will cause her to be naked, and the men/ones that she sleeps with will see her in that shameful condition.

Some versions, such as the GNT and NLT quoted below, leave the connection implied. Use a natural way in your language to introduce the next action that a person will take.

I will expose her lewdness in the sight of her lovers: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as lewdness can refer specifically to a woman’s genitals.BDB (#5040), also HALOT (electronic edition, page 664). NIDOTTE (#5578), citing this verse specifically, says the noun “ refers to the private parts of a woman.” Stuart (vol. 31, page 51). says that the Hebrew word is used here by metonymy for the woman’s “nakedness, and perhaps even genitalia." This figurative clause probably indicates here that the LORD (the husband) will remove Israel’s (his wife’s) clothing so that her lovers will see her naked body, specifically her private parts. The purpose of this punishment was to publicly shame the woman.

her lovers: This phrase could refer to the Baal gods or other idols that Israel worshiped. It could also refer to other nations that were her allies.Only a few commentaries specify the identity of the lovers. Wood (page 177) says that Israel’s “lovers” are “the neighboring nations.” Hubbard (page 78) and Lange (page 37) understand the Baals, or more generally, the idols, as the “lovers.” If possible, use a general word or phrase that could refer to either kind of lovers.

No one will rescue/save her from my powerful hands.
No one will be able to rescue her from me.

no one will deliver her out of My hands: In Hebrew, the phrase deliver her out of means “rescue her from.” Here the term My hands is a figure of speech that represents the LORD (the husband) or his power. In some languages, it may be clearer to translate only the meaning and not keep the figure of speech. For example:
