OET (OET-RV) They’re saying, ‘This isn’t yet the time to build houses. This city is like a cooking pot, and we’re the meat.’
(Occurrence 0) The time to build houses is not now
(Some words not found in UHB: the,say not in/on/at/with,near daughters_of houses she/it the,pot and,we the,meat )
This shows the people feel so secure they are not worried about building houses now. Other versions of the Bible read, “Now is the time to build our houses.” This would mean that the people want to build houses because they feel secure.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) this city is the pot, and we are the meat
(Some words not found in UHB: the,say not in/on/at/with,near daughters_of houses she/it the,pot and,we the,meat )
The people speak of themselves as if they were good cuts of meat and of the city as if it were a pot in which the meat was stored or cooked. The metaphor suggests that they are important and safe within the city. Alternate translation: “This city is like a pot that will protect us as a pot protects meat”
(Occurrence 0) the pot
(Some words not found in UHB: the,say not in/on/at/with,near daughters_of houses she/it the,pot and,we the,meat )
This could mean: (1) a pot for storing meat or (2) a pot for cooking meat.
11:1-11 Having given Ezekiel a glimpse of the divine perspective on Jerusalem, the Spirit brought him back to overhear the words of the city’s inhabitants. The wicked counselors asserted that though the assault by the Babylonians (the fire) was troublesome (hot), the defenses of the city (the iron pot) were sufficient to protect them (the meat). These counselors were telling people to build houses—on stolen land (see 11:15, 17)—in which they could live safely. God, however, was determined to judge the wicked.
OET (OET-RV) They’re saying, ‘This isn’t yet the time to build houses. This city is like a cooking pot, and we’re the meat.’
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
