OET (OET-LV)And_they_said to/for_why Oh_YHWH the_god of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) has_it_happened this_[thing] in/on/at/with_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) that_missing the_day from_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) a_tribe one.

OET (OET-RV)asking, “Oh Yahweh, God of Israel, why has this happened to Israel—for one tribe to be missing from Israel now?”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Why, Yahweh, God of Israel, has this happened to Israel, that one of our tribes should be missing today?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said to/for,why? YHWH god Yisrael she/it_was this in/on/at/with,Israel that,missing the=day from,Israel tribe one(ms) )

The people of Israel used this rhetorical question to express their deep sadness. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “Oh Yahweh, we are so sad that one of the tribes of Israel has been completely destroyed.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:3 The concept of a twelve-tribe league was deeply rooted in Israel, having survived the separation of Levi from the secular tribes, the virtual disappearance of Simeon and Asher, and the division of Joseph into two (Manasseh and Ephraim). The loss of one tribe would have suggested that God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob was coming unglued.
