OET (OET-LV)And_feared very if/because [was]_a_city great Giⱱˊōn like_one of_the_cities the_royal and_because/when it [was]_great more_than the_ˊAy and_all men_its [were]_warriors.

OET (OET-RV)the people of Yerushalem were very afraid because Gibeon had been a powerful city, stronger than Ay, and all it’s warriors were powerful.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ

and,feared

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. This first phrase would then be at the end of the verse. Alternate translation: “then they feared greatly”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ

and,feared

The pronoun they refers both to the king of Jerusalem, mentioned in the previous verse, and to the people who lived in that city. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “the people of Jerusalem and their king feared greatly”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

עָרֵ֣י הַמַּמְלָכָ֑ה

cities the,royal

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of kingdom, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “the cities that a king ruled”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:2 Gibeon was apparently not one of the royal cities. Gibeon might have been subservient to Canaan-controlled Jerusalem before making the covenant with Joshua, or it might have been an independent town controlled by a few leading families.
