OET (OET-LV) Indeed_(defeat) you_have_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and_it_has_lifted_you heart_of_your be_honoured and_remain in_house_of_your and_for_what will_you_engage_in_strife with_harm and_you_will_fall you and_Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with_you.
OET (OET-RV) It’s true that you won a battle with Edom and you’re feeling encouraged. Accept that honour, but stay home now. Why would you stir up trouble only to fall again—you and all Yehudah with you?”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
הַכֵּ֤ה הִכִּ֨יתָ֙
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash is repeating forms of the verb “strike” in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [Certainly you have struck]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
הַכֵּ֤ה הִכִּ֨יתָ֙
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
See how you translated the similar expression in [3:24](../03/24.md). Alternate translation: [Certainly you have defeated]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וּֽנְשָׂאֲךָ֖ לִבֶּ֑ךָ
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash is speaking as if Amaziah’s heart had actually lifted him up. He is using the heart to represent a person’s feelings, and he is using being lifted to a high position to mean becoming proud. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and you are so elated that you have become proud]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
הִכָּבֵד֙
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
The expression Be honored is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Be content with the honors that come with your victory]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וְשֵׁ֣ב בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash assumes that Amaziah will know that by stay in your house, he does not mean that Amaziah should not leave his palace. He means that he should not lead his army out to war against him. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [but do not lead your army out to war against me]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
וְלָ֤מָּה תִתְגָּרֶה֙ בְּרָעָ֔ה וְנָ֣פַלְתָּ֔ה אַתָּ֖ה וִיהוּדָ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash is using the question form to warn Amaziah and discourage him from fighting. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [There is no reason for you to contend with calamity, so that you will fall, you and Judah with you!]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
תִתְגָּרֶה֙ בְּרָעָ֔ה
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash is speaking of calamity as if it were a living thing that Amaziah could actually contend with. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [why should you stir up trouble] or [why should you risk causing calamity for your kingdom]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְנָ֣פַלְתָּ֔ה אַתָּ֖ה וִיהוּדָ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ
(Some words not found in UHB: to_defeat you_defeated DOM ʼEdōm and,it,has_lifted_you heart_of,your enjoy_~_glory and,remain in,house_of,your and=for=what? provoke with,harm and,you_will_fall you(ms) and=Yəhūdāh/(Yihudah) with,you )
Jehoash is speaking as if Amaziah and Judah would actually fall from a height. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [so that you will be destroyed, you and Judah with you] or [so that both you and Judah will be destroyed]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
