SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–13: Satan tempted Jesus

In this section, Luke wrote that the devil (Satan) tempted Jesus, that is, the devil tried to persuade Jesus to do things that God did not want Jesus to do. Luke told about three of those things. Jesus did not do any of the things that the devil suggested. He refused the devil and his temptations by quoting the word of God from the book of Deuteronomy.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

The Temptation of Jesus

Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil (NCV)

There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 4:1–11, and a shorter version occurs in Mark 1:12–13.

Paragraph 4:9–12

In this paragraph, Luke reported another way that the devil tempted Jesus.Luke chose to report this temptation last in the series of three, but Matthew reports it second. The order in which Matthew reported these three temptations is probably the order in which they actually occurred. In this paragraph, the devil tempted Jesus to put himself in danger. If Jesus had put himself in danger, he would have sinned, because he would have tested God.

Then: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Then is a common connecting word. It does not necessarily imply a time reference, and so some English versions, such as the ESV, translate it as “and.” Other versions, such as the NIV, do not translate this conjunction.

The events in this paragraph may have occurred before the temptation in 4:5–8. So if it is natural in your language to begin this paragraph with a connecting word or phrase, you should be as general as possible. For example:

Also

Another time

In some languages, certain time words may not necessarily indicate that this paragraph occurred immediately after 4:5–8. If that is true in your language, a word such as Then may be appropriate. Connect 4:4a to 4:3b in a way that is natural in your language.

4:12a

But Jesus answered, “It also says,

But: The Greek word that the BSB translates as But is a conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Some English versions, such as the ESV, translate it that way. Other versions, such as the NIV and NET, do not translate this conjunction here. Connect 4:12a to 4:11b in a way that is natural in your language.

Jesus answered: As in 4:4a and 4:8a, the Greek word that the BSB literally translates as answered here means “replied” or “responded.” Jesus was not answering a question. He was responding to an attempt by the devil to tempt him to sin.

Jesus was refusing to do what Satan had wanted. You may need to make this clear in your translation. For example:

Jesus refused. He said…

It also says: The phrase that the BSB translates here as It also says, which is literally “it is said,” refers to the Scriptures. It has the same meaning as “It is written” in 4:4a and 4:8a. Some English versions have made this explicit, using an active verb. For example:

Scripture says (NJB)

The Scriptures also say (CEV)

4:12b

‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Do not put the Lord your God to the test: Other ways to translate the Greek clause that the BSB translates as Do not put the Lord your God to the test are:

Do not test the Lord your God (NCV)

Never tempt the Lord your God (GW)

Here in 4:12b, Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy 6:16. God had forbidden people to test him. In this context, Jesus meant that jumping down from the temple would be testing God. It would have been a sin. He would have tested God to prove that God would save him.

General Comment on 4:12a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to translate the quotation from the Scriptures as indirect speech. For example:

The Scriptures say that no one should test the Lord our(excl) God.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ)

Together the words answering and said mean that Jesus responded to the challenge that the devil posed. Alternate translation: [Jesus responded to him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

εἴρηται, οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [It is said that one must not test the Lord his God]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ὅτι εἴρηται,

said ˱to˲_him ¬the Jesus ¬that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ)

Jesus clearly implies in his answer that he is rejecting the devil’s challenge. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly, as UST does. Alternate translation: [Jesus replied, “No, I will not do that, because it is said]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

εἴρηται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state what is doing the action. Alternate translation: [The Scriptures say]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ)

The Scriptures are using a statement to give a command. Alternate translation: [You must not test the Lord your God]
