In this section, Luke wrote that the devil (Satan) tempted Jesus, that is, the devil tried to persuade Jesus to do things that God did not want Jesus to do. Luke told about three of those things. Jesus did not do any of the things that the devil suggested. He refused the devil and his temptations by quoting the word of God from the book of Deuteronomy.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
The Temptation of Jesus
Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil (NCV)
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 4:1–11, and a shorter version occurs in Mark 1:12–13.
In this paragraph, Luke reported another way that the devil tempted Jesus.Luke reports this temptation as the second temptation of the three. In Matthew 4 this temptation is reported third. The first two temptations that Luke reported happened in the desert, and the third temptation happened at the temple in Jerusalem. The devil tempted Jesus to make an agreement with him.
So if You worship me,
So if you bow down to worship me,
Therefore, if you kneel before me,
So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So introduces the conclusion to all that Satan said in 4:6. The NASB translates this conjunction as:
Therefore
if You worship me: The phrase if You worship me is the sin that the devil was tempting Jesus to commit. The devil promised to give Jesus authority over the nations, but only if Jesus worshiped him. The devil wanted Jesus to acknowledge him to be his leader. He wanted to gain control over Jesus.
worship me: The Greek word that the BSB translates as worship refers to bowing down before someone or something. In biblical times, people bowed down, knelt, or lay on the ground before their kings and their idols. In this way, they showed respect, reverence, and humility.
Some other ways to translate this are:
bow down and worship me (NLT96)
kneel down before me
it will all be Yours.”
all this authority/power will be yours.”
you will have all authority/power over the nations.”
I will give it all to you.” (NLT)
it will all be Yours: The phrase it will all be Yours means “all the authority over the nations will be yours.” Satan was telling Jesus that if Jesus would worship him, then Satan would cause Jesus to control the world. Some other ways to translate this are:
I will give it all to you (NLT)
you can control the whole world
you will rule every nation
Satan was lying. Luke did not imply that the devil was telling the truth. He simply reported what the devil said.
In some languages, it may be more natural to change the order of 4:7a and 4:7b. For example:
7bI will give it all to you 7aif you will bow down and worship me. (NLT96)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
σὺ & ἐὰν προσκυνήσῃς ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Οὖν ἐάν προσκυνήσῃς ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ ἔσται σοῦ πάσα)
The implication is that the devil wants visible, direct worship that will be an official act of submission. Alternate translation: [If you will bow down in worship directly in front of me]
ἐνώπιον
before
Here, the term before means “in front of.”
ἔσται σοῦ πᾶσα
will_be ˱of˲_you (Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Οὖν ἐάν προσκυνήσῃς ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ ἔσται σοῦ πάσα)
Alternate translation: [I will give you all of these kingdoms]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
