OET (OET-RV)Later everyone was telling others about him, and they were marvelling at his messages displaying God’s grace, and they asked each other, “Isn’t this Yosef’s son from down the road?”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:14–30: The people rejected Jesus at Nazareth

In the synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus read a text from Isaiah that refers to the Messiah. Jesus said that what this scripture talked about was happening as he read it. By saying this, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. He used examples from the history of Israel to show that the Israelites did not believe and obey God well. He implied that people from other countries were ready to believe and obey God more than the people of Israel were. So the people of Nazareth tried to kill Jesus, but they could not.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

The People of Nazareth Turn against Jesus (CEV)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth (ESV)

There is a parallel passage for this section in Mark 6:1–6.

4:22a

All spoke well of Him

All spoke well of Him: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as spoke well indicates here that the people expressed approval of Jesus. They were impressed by what he said. All the people in the synagogue said good things about his teaching. This appears to have been their initial response. Later, they would resent what he said and oppose him. Another way to translate this is:

They were all well impressed with him (GNT)

4:22b

and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips.

marveled: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as marveled also means “were amazed” or “admired.” Another way to translate this is:

wondered (RSV)

This word also occurs at 2:18.

the gracious words that came from His lips: Here are some other ways to translate the phrase that the BSB translates as the gracious words that came from His lips:

the wonderful things he said (CEV)

the eloquent words that he spoke (GNT)

gracious: The Greek word that the BSB translates as gracious means “appealing, attractive, wonderful, beautiful.”

came from His lips: The phrase came from His lips is literally “coming out from his mouth.” This is an idiom. It simply means “he said/spoke.” Unless you have a similar idiom in your language, you should not use the word for “mouth” or “lips” in your translation.

4:22c

“Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.

Isn’t this the son of Joseph?: This is a rhetorical question. It expresses surprise and amazement. The people were incredulous. This was Jesus’ hometown, and people there had known him for many years. The rhetorical question reflects their incredulity. He was so familiar to them that they were not willing to accept that he could be the fulfillment of this prophecy. You may want to express this in a footnote in your translation.

The people assumed that the answer to their question was “yes.” The people in the synagogue had seen Jesus grow up in their town. They found it difficult to accept that Jesus, whom they thought they knew well, spoke as well he did.

Some ways to translate this are:

Use the form that is most natural in your language for this kind of amazement.

they asked: In Greek, the verb that the BSB translates as they asked occurs before the rhetorical question. The BSB has placed the words they asked after the question. Place them where it is natural in your language.

asked: In some languages, it may be more natural to use a verb other than asked to introduce a rhetorical question. Do not use a word that only introduces questions that require an answer.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος

the words ¬the ˱of˲_grace

Luke uses the term words to describe what Jesus said by reference to something associated with it, the words he used to communicate it. Alternate translation: [the articulate things]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ

the words ¬the ˱of˲_grace ¬which going_out out_of the mouth ˱of˲_him

In your language, this phrase might seem like an unnecessarily elaborate way of speaking. If so, you could express the same idea more compactly. Alternate translation: [the gracious things he was saying]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

οὐχὶ υἱός ἐστιν Ἰωσὴφ οὗτος?

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καί ἐθαύμαζον ἐπί τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καί ἔλεγον Οὐχί υἱός ἐστίν Ἰωσήφ οὗτος)

The people were making a statement, not asking a question. They did not expect others to verify for them who Jesus’ father was. Instead, they were using the question form to say how amazed they were. Joseph was not a religious leader, so they were surprised that his son would preach as well as he did. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words as a statement or exclamation. Alternate translation: [This is just Joseph’s son!]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:16-30 Jesus’ sermon in Nazareth previewed his whole public ministry. Jesus returned to his hometown synagogue to announce the good news that God’s salvation had now arrived. The people were pleased until Jesus reminded them that God reaches out to Gentiles as well as to Jews. The infuriated crowd then attempted to kill him.

OET (OET-LV)And all were_testifying to_him, and were_marvelling at the messages of_ the _grace which going_out out_of the mouth of_him, and they_were_saying, is this Not the_son of_Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf)?

OET (OET-RV)Later everyone was telling others about him, and they were marvelling at his messages displaying God’s grace, and they asked each other, “Isn’t this Yosef’s son from down the road?”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
