SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–6: Jesus sent his twelve apostles to preach and heal people

Jesus sent his twelve apostles to different towns to preach about God’s kingdom, to heal people, and to cast out demons. He gave them instructions about the trip (9:3), about where they should stay (9:4), and about what to do when people did not welcome them (9:5).

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Another heading for this section is:

Jesus sent out the twelve apostles/disciples

The Sending of the Twelve Apostles (NET)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:35, 10:5–15, and Mark 6:6–13.

9:2a

And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God

And He sent them out: In this context the word sent means “told to go.” The disciples did not actually leave until 9:6. Jesus told the twelve apostles to go to where the people were. He told them to help the people by preaching about the kingdom of God and healing the sick.

to proclaim the kingdom of God: The phrase to proclaim the kingdom of God means “to speak to the people about the kingdom of God.” The phrase the kingdom of God refers to God’s rule. It does not refer here to a land or country that he rules over. Instead, it refers to God ruling people through the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It refers to the relationship that he has with his people. He leads, protects, and cares for them. They trust and obey him as their king.

Some ways to translate the kingdom of God in this context are:

This phrase first occurred in Luke in 4:43a. See kingdom of God in the Glossary.

to proclaim: The Greek word that the BSB translates as proclaim means to tell people publicly something important. Some other ways to translate proclaim in this context are:

announce

proclaim

tell people

9:2b

and to heal the sick.

heal the sick: There is a textual issue here:

  1. Most Greek manuscripts have “heal the sick.” For example:

heal the sick (NCV) (BSB, NIV, KJV, REB, NET, GNT, NLT, CEV, GW, NCV)

  2. One important Greek manuscript only has “heal.” For example:

    heal (RSV) (NASB, RSV, NJB)

It is recommended that you follow option (1).

uW Translation Notes:

ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς

˱he˲_sent_out (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἀπέστειλεν αὐτούς κηρύσσειν τήν Βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί ἰᾶσθαι τούς ἀσθενεῖς)

Your language may require you to say where Jesus sent the disciples. Alternate translation: [sent them to various places] or [told them to go to various places]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὴν Βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἀπέστειλεν αὐτούς κηρύσσειν τήν Βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί ἰᾶσθαι τούς ἀσθενεῖς)

See how you decided to translate this phrase in [4:43](../04/43.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun kingdom with a verb such as “rule.” Alternate translation: [how God would rule]
