SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:51–56: The people of a Samaritan village refused to receive Jesus

Even though the Samaritan people were partly Jewish (2 Kings 17:24–41), they worshiped God differently than the Jews did. Their main place of worship was on Mount Gerazim, while the Jews’ main place of worship was in Jerusalem (John 4:20). The Samaritans did not want Jews to travel through their district on the way to worship in Jerusalem. That is why they rejected Jesus and his disciples.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

People From a Samaritan Village Reject Jesus (GW)

Samaritan Opposition (NIV)

9:55

But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

But Jesus turned and rebuked them: There is a textual issue here. After the word “them” in 9:55, some Greek manuscripts add the words, “You do not know of what sort of spirit you are.” These manuscripts begin 9:56 with the words “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy souls of men but to save.” Most English versions do not include this addition. It is recommended that you not add these words. Jesus was probably leading the disciples along the road. He turned around to speak to James and John. He answered them by rebuking them, that is, by telling them that they were thinking in a wrong way. Jesus did not want them to ask God to kill the Samaritan villagers. Another way to translate this clause is:

But Jesus turned and scolded them (NCV)

But Jesus turned and corrected them for what they had said (CEV)

rebuked: The word rebuked means that Jesus made it clear that what the disciples had said was wrong. They had a wrong attitude. In some languages it may be necessary to use direct speech. Supply something general such as:

said, “No. That is wrong.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

στραφεὶς & ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: στραφείς Δέ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς)

The pronoun them refers to James and John. Jesus did not condemn the Samaritans, as the disciples expected. Alternate translation: [Jesus turned around and rebuked James and John]
