OET (OET-RV) Also, another person said, “I’ll follow after you, master, but first let me go back and say goodbye to everyone at home.”
In the previous section, Luke spoke about the unwillingness of people in a Samaritan village to receive Jesus. In this Section 9:57–62, Luke told about three men who said that they were willing to follow Jesus. However, they did not understand the difficulties involved. Jesus warned each of them that it would not be easy. He told them that they must put the kingdom of God above everything else in their lives.
Some other examples of headings for this section are:
The Difficulty of Following Jesus
Three People Who Wanted To Be Jesus’ Followers
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 8:19–22.
Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord;
¶ Another person said to Jesus, “Lord/Master, I will become your(sing) disciple.
¶ There was yet someone else who said, “Lord/Sir, I will go with you as your(sing) disciple.
Still another said: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Still another is literally “and also another.” Here it refers to the third person in a series.
I will follow You: The statement I will follow You is identical to the first clause of 9:57b. It indicates that this man wanted to become a regular disciple of Jesus.
Lord: The title Lord also occurs in 9:54b. See Lord, Context 3, in the Glossary.
but first let me bid farewell to my family.”
But first, allow me to return to my family for a while and say good-bye to them.”
But before I do that, I would like to go home and say good-bye to my household/relatives.”
but: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as but here introduces a request that interferes or contrasts with the man’s desire to follow Jesus. Introduce it in a natural way in your language.
first let me bid farewell to my family: This statement is a request. The man asked Jesus’ permission to go home and say goodbye to his family before he became Jesus’ disciple. This could have involved a lot of time spent in feasting and visiting.
my family: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as my family is literally “the ones in my house.” It refers to all of the man’s relatives who were living in his household. It can also include other relatives in the same area, even if they were not living in the same house. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
my relatives
our(excl) household

As in [5:27](../05/27.md), to follow Jesus means to become one of his disciples. Alternate translation: [I want to be one of your disciples]
πρῶτον δὲ ἐπίτρεψόν μοι
first (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ καί ἕτερος Ἀκολουθήσω σοί Κύριε πρῶτον δέ ἐπίτρεψον μοί ἀποτάξασθαι τοῖς εἰς τόν οἶκον μού)
Alternate translation: [but before I do that, please let me]

This person is referring to his family by association with where they live. Alternate translation: [to my family]
9:57-62 As he traveled toward Jerusalem to suffer and die, Jesus explained the cost to those who wished to follow him.
OET (OET-LV) And also another he_said:
I_will_be_following after_you, master, but first permit to_me to_bid_goodbye to_the ones at the home of_me.
OET (OET-RV) Also, another person said, “I’ll follow after you, master, but first let me go back and say goodbye to everyone at home.”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
