OET (OET-LV)And I_was_besought of_the apprentices/followers of_you that they_may_throw_out it, and they_were_ not _able.

OET (OET-RV)I tried to get your apprentices to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:37–43a: Jesus expelled an evil spirit from a boy

Earlier Jesus had given power to his twelve apostles to cast out demons (9:1). However, after Jesus came down from the mountain with Peter, James, and John, he heard that the other disciples had not been able to make an evil spirit leave a man’s son. When the boy approached Jesus, the unclean spirit caused the boy to convulse violently. Then Jesus cast out the unclean spirit, and the people were filled with awe.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

The Healing of a Boy with an Evil Spirit (NIV)

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Evil Spirit (GNT)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 17:14–21 and Mark 9:14–29.

9:40

I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”

I begged Your disciples to drive it out: The father had already pleaded with the other disciples to cast out the demon. This apparently happened before Jesus and the three disciples came back down the mountain.

disciples: The word disciples also occurs in 9:14b. See the note there for a more complete description of this term.

to drive it out: The Greek word that the BSB translates as to drive it out is literally “to cast/throw it out.” To drive out an unclean spirit means to cause an evil spirit to stop controlling a person. Jesus (or the disciples) did this by commanding the spirit/spirits to leave. See the note at 9:1b for more information.

but they were unable: The phrase they were unable means that the disciples were not able to make the demon leave the man’s son. They tried, but they were not successful.
