SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:28–36: Three disciples saw Jesus’ glory

In 9:26 Jesus spoke about the time when he would return to earth and people would see his glory. Then in 9:28–36 God caused Jesus to be glorified for a short time. Peter, James, and John saw this. During that time, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. Peter suggested building shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. God showed these disciples that Jesus was greater than the great prophets Moses and Elijah because Jesus was God’s Son.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah (NCV)

God showed three disciples who Jesus really was

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 17:1–12 and Mark 9:2–13.

9:31a

They appeared in glory

They appeared in glory: The phrase appeared in glory indicates that Moses and Elijah shone brightly. They were surrounded with a dazzling light, as Jesus was. Another way to translate this is:

appeared in heavenly glory (NCV)

9:31b

and spoke about His departure,

9:31c

which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

9:31b–c

and spoke about His departure: Moses and Elijah spoke with Jesus about His departure from the world. The Greek word that the BSB translates as departure is exodos. It refers mainly here to Jesus’ death. However, it could also include his rising from the dead and ascending to heaven. If you can translate it in a way that includes both meanings, you should do so. For example:

Jesus’ leaving this life

how/when Jesus would depart from this world

If it is not possible to imply both meanings, you should use an expression that refers to Jesus’ death. For example:

Jesus’ approaching death (GW)

which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem: The Greek word that the BSB translates as accomplish implies that Jesus would accomplish what God had sent him (into the world) to do. Jesus would cause God’s plan to happen, just as God had said.

In some languages it is not natural to speak of accomplishing or fulfilling a departure/death. The meaning here is that Jesus was about to fulfill God’s plan through his death. It may be necessary to make this meaning more explicit. For example:

he would soon fulfill God’s purpose by dying in Jerusalem (GNT)

General Comment on 9:30–31b

The BSB has changed the order of the phrases in verse 30. Other versions, such as the NIV and the NLT, include some part of 9:31 in 9:30 for clarity. The ESV follows the Greek order. Compare the order of the phrases in the NIV and ESV below.

30Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31aappeared in glorious splendor, 30talking with Jesus. 31bThey spoke about his departure… (NIV)

30And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31awho appeared in glory 31band spoke of his departure… (ESV)

The NLT has used a different order from either the NIV or ESV. It says:

30Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, 31aappeared 30and began talking with Jesus. 31aThey were glorious to see. 31bAnd they were speaking about his exodus from this world… (NLT)

You should arrange the phrases in 9:30–31b in a way that is natural in your language. You may especially wish to reorder the Greek phrases if it would be unusual for you to describe Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus before saying that they appeared.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οἳ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἵ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ ἔλεγον τήν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ ἥν ἤμελλεν πληροῦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ)

This phrase gives information about how Moses and Elijah looked. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [who appeared in glorious splendor] or [who were shining brightly]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

τὴν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἵ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ ἔλεγον τήν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ ἥν ἤμελλεν πληροῦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ)

Luke is using a polite way of referring to Jesus’ death. Alternate translation: [how Jesus would leave this world] or [how Jesus would die]

ἣν ἤμελλεν πληροῦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἵ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ ἔλεγον τήν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ ἥν ἤμελλεν πληροῦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ)

Alternate translation: [which was soon going to happen in Jerusalem]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:31 his exodus from this world: The Greek word exodos means “departure.” As the exodus from Egypt was God’s great act of deliverance in the Old Testament, so Jesus’ exodus from this world—his death, resurrection, and ascension—was God’s great act of deliverance in the New Testament. Jesus would accomplish a new and greater exodus.
