SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:28–36: Three disciples saw Jesus’ glory

In 9:26 Jesus spoke about the time when he would return to earth and people would see his glory. Then in 9:28–36 God caused Jesus to be glorified for a short time. Peter, James, and John saw this. During that time, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. Peter suggested building shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. God showed these disciples that Jesus was greater than the great prophets Moses and Elijah because Jesus was God’s Son.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah (NCV)

God showed three disciples who Jesus really was

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 17:1–12 and Mark 9:2–13.

9:32a

Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep,

9:32a–b

In this verse Luke indicated that the disciples had fallen asleep. They were asleep during the time when Moses and Elijah talked with Jesus (9:31). Languages have different ways to talk about events that happen at the same time like this. Some ways to do this in English are:

Peter and the other two disciples had been sound asleep (CEV)

While they were talking, Peter and his companions were sleeping soundly

Use a natural way in your language to make this connection clear.

Meanwhile: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Meanwhile. Some English versions, such as the ESV, NASB, and NET, see it as introducing background information and translate it as “Now.” Other versions, such as the KJV and NLV, see it as introducing a contrast and translate it as “But.” Still other versions, such as the CEV, GNT, NIV, and NLT, do not translate this conjunction. Connect 9:32a to 9:31c in a way that is natural in your language.

Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke: The Greek idiom that the BSB translates as were overcome by sleep is literally “were burdened with sleep.” There are two ways to interpret this idiom, along with the word awoke in this verse:

  1. It indicates that the disciples were completely asleep for a short time and then woke up. For example:

Peter and his companions were sound asleep, but they woke up (GNT) (BSB, GNT, NASB, RSV, NJB, REB, GW, NLT, CEV)

  2. It indicates that the disciples were very sleepy but stayed awake. For example:

Peter and those with him were quite sleepy, but as they became fully awake (NET) (NIV, NRSV, NET)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), along with a majority of scholars and English versions. The GW has been used as the source line in the Display.

9:32b

but when they awoke,

In Greek this verse part begins with a conjunction that the BSB translates as “but.” It is a common conjunction that can be translated in different ways in different contexts. Some English versions, such as the NLT and GW, do not translate a conjunction here. Do what is natural in your language for this context.

when they awoke: The Greek verb here is literally “having awakened.” It introduces what the disciples saw in 9:32c. Some English versions translate it with an introductory clause, as the BSB does. Other versions start a new sentence here. For example:

All at once they woke up (CEV)

9:32c

they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.

they saw Jesus’ glory: The clause they saw Jesus’ glory means that the three disciples saw the shining/bright light that came from Jesus and surrounded him. They saw that Jesus was shining brightly like a heavenly being. Another way to translate this is:

saw how glorious Jesus was (CEV)

and the two men standing with Him: The disciples also saw that two men were standing with him. It is clear from 9:33c that they somehow recognized the men to be Moses and Elijah.

Luke uses the word And to introduce background information about what Peter, James, and John were doing while Jesus was speaking with Moses and Elijah. Alternate translation: [Now]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ & Πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ ἦσαν βεβαρημένοι ὕπνῳ

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [sleep was weighing heavily upon Peter and James and John]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

ὁ & Πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ ἦσαν βεβαρημένοι ὕπνῳ

Luke speaks of sleep as if it were something that could be like a weight pressing down on a person. Alternate translation: [Peter and James and John all felt very sleepy]

As in [2:9](../02/09.md), the implication is that this glory manifested visibly as a bright light. Alternate translation: [they saw brilliant light shining around Jesus] or [they saw a very bright light coming from Jesus]

καὶ τοὺς δύο ἄνδρας τοὺς συνεστῶτας αὐτῷ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Πέτρος καί οἱ σύν αὐτῷ ἦσαν βεβαρημένοι ὕπνῳ διαγρηγορήσαντες δέ εἶδον τήν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καί τούς δύο ἄνδρας τούς συνεστῶτας αὐτῷ)

The phrase the two men refers to Moses and Elijah. Alternate translation: [and they also saw Moses and Elijah]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:28-36 At the transfiguration, Jesus’ true glory was unveiled for three disciples to witness, confirming Peter’s confession that Jesus was the Christ. Moses and Elijah confirmed that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.
