OET (OET-LV)And at the time the voice to_become, only Yaʸsous was_found.
And they kept_silent, and they_reported to_no_one in those the days nothing of_what things they_have_seen.

OET (OET-RV)By the time that the voice had spoken, they could only see Yeshua in front of them. After this event, they kept what had happened to themselves and didn’t tell anyone else about what they’d seen.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:28–36: Three disciples saw Jesus’ glory

In 9:26 Jesus spoke about the time when he would return to earth and people would see his glory. Then in 9:28–36 God caused Jesus to be glorified for a short time. Peter, James, and John saw this. During that time, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. Peter suggested building shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. God showed these disciples that Jesus was greater than the great prophets Moses and Elijah because Jesus was God’s Son.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah (NCV)

God showed three disciples who Jesus really was

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 17:1–12 and Mark 9:2–13.

9:36a

After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them.

After the voice had spoken: As in 9:35a, it may be necessary to say that it was God who had spoken. There may also be other ways to express this idea. For example:

When God had spoken

When the voice stopped (GNT)

only Jesus was present with them: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as only Jesus was present with them is literally “Jesus was found alone.” This is a passive phrase. In this context, the word “found” indicates that Jesus was alone and that the disciples saw or recognized that. The disciples saw that Moses and Elijah had gone. Of the three, only Jesus was left. Other ways to translate this clause are:

they saw that Jesus was alone (GW)

Peter, John, and James saw only Jesus

9:36b

The disciples kept this to themselves,

The disciples kept this to themselves: The phrase that the BSB translates as kept this to themselves is literally “kept silent” in Greek. It does not mean that they did not speak at all. It means that the three disciples kept quiet about what had happened. They did not talk to anyone else about the amazing things they had seen. Your language may have an expression that describes not speaking about something specific. For example:

they held their peace

9:36c

and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen.

in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen: The phrase did not tell anyone what they had seen is literally “reported to no one…anything of what they had seen.” This statement repeats the same meaning as 9:36b. The repetition emphasizes the meaning that the disciples said absolutely nothing about this event.

This part of the verse adds the phrase in those days. This implies that later the disciples did tell others about what they had seen.

in those days: The phrase in those days refers to the remaining time of Jesus’ ministry on this earth. In the parallel verses in Matthew 17:9 and Mark 9:9, Jesus specifically ordered his disciples not to tell anyone about this until after he had risen from the dead. If it would be helpful to your readers, you may want to put this information in a footnote.

what they had seen: The phrase what they had seen includes all that the disciples had seen, heard, and experienced on the mountain. In some languages it may be necessary to make some of this information explicit. For example:

what they had seen and heard

General Comment on 9:36b–c

Some other ways to translate 9:36b–c are:

Peter, John, and James said nothing and told no one at that time what they had seen. (NCV)

The disciples kept quiet about all this and told no one at that time anything they had seen. (GNT)

The disciples kept these things that they had seen a secret. They did not say anything to anyone else.

uW Translation Notes:

ἐν τῷ γενέσθαι τὴν φωνὴν

at the_‹time› ˓to˒_become in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐν τῷ γενέσθαι τήν φωνήν εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος Καί αὐτοί ἐσίγησαν καί οὐδενί ἀπήγγειλαν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις οὐδέν ὧν ἑωράκασιν)

Alternate translation: [after the voice had spoken]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος

˓was˒_found Jesus only

The term found is an idiom that means “could be found” or “was there.” Alternate translation: [only Jesus was there]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος

˓was˒_found Jesus only

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state Jesus was found alone with an active form. Alternate translation: [only Jesus was there]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

αὐτοὶ ἐσίγησαν, καὶ οὐδενὶ ἀπήγγειλαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐν τῷ γενέσθαι τήν φωνήν εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος Καί αὐτοί ἐσίγησαν καί οὐδενί ἀπήγγειλαν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις οὐδέν ὧν ἑωράκασιν)

These two phrases mean the same thing. (The Greek verb in the first phrase does not always mean to make no sound. It can also mean to keep a secret.) Luke uses the two phrases together for emphasis. In your translation, you could also use repetition for emphasis, or, If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine the phrases. Alternate translation: [they kept it a secret and did not tell anyone] or [they said nothing about it to anyone]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐδενὶ ἀπήγγειλαν & οὐδὲν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐν τῷ γενέσθαι τήν φωνήν εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος Καί αὐτοί ἐσίγησαν καί οὐδενί ἀπήγγειλαν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις οὐδέν ὧν ἑωράκασιν)

Luke uses a double negative in Greek for emphasis here, “told no one … nothing.” The second negative does not cancel the first to create a positive meaning, “told someone … something.” If for emphasis your language uses double negatives that do not cancel one another, it would be appropriate to use that construction here.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις

at in those ¬the days

Here Luke uses the term days to refer to a particular time. Alternate translation: [at that time]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:28-36 At the transfiguration, Jesus’ true glory was unveiled for three disciples to witness, confirming Peter’s confession that Jesus was the Christ. Moses and Elijah confirmed that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
