OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Should I not be careful to say only what Yahweh puts in my mouth?

(Some words not found in UHB: and,answered and,said ?,not DOM which/who puts YHWH in/on/at/with,mouth_of,my DOM=him/it take_care to,speak )

Balaam uses this rhetorical question to defend his actions. This can be translated as a statement. Alternate translation: “I must be very careful to say only what Yahweh tells me to say.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) to say only what Yahweh puts in my mouth

(Some words not found in UHB: and,answered and,said ?,not DOM which/who puts YHWH in/on/at/with,mouth_of,my DOM=him/it take_care to,speak )

The message is spoken of as if it is something that God put into his mouth. See how you translated a similar phrase in [Numbers 22:38](../22/38.md). Alternate translation: “to say only what Yahweh wants me to say”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

23:1-30 As a diviner, Balaam performed rituals to interpret omens and ascertain Israel’s future (cp. 23:23; 24:1). Balak had summoned him to pronounce imprecations, but God repeatedly prohibited him from doing so.
• It is possible that these sacrifices were connected with the practice of extispicy—the examination of animal livers or other organs for an omen concerning the future. According to ancient Near Eastern texts, this form of fortune-telling was a widely practiced and highly developed art. Such practices were banned from Israel (see Deut 18:9-14; cp. Ezek 21:21).
