TSNTyndale Study Notes:

16:6 Punishment of God’s enemies is a just reward because they killed God’s holy people and prophets. Because they have shed . . . blood, they must drink . . . blood. The principle of lex talionis (the law of retribution), the basis of Roman and Jewish jurisprudence, means that God is completely just in judging and rewarding people on the basis of what they have done (see 2:23; 11:18; 14:13; 18:6; 20:12, 13; 22:12).

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–21: The angels poured the seven bowls

In this section, each of the seven angels in turn poured God’s wrath from his bowl. Each angel caused a different plague to happen on the earth. The people of the earth suffered greatly from the plagues, but they refused to repent.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The seven angels poured God’s wrath from seven bowls

The seven bowls of God’s anger

16:6a

For they have spilled the blood of saints and prophets,

For: This conjunction probably introduces an explanation. The BSB and some English versions use the conjunction For. Other English versions allow the context to indicate that it is an explanation. They do not explicitly translate the Greek conjunction. For example:

They poured out the blood of God’s people…. (GNT)

they have spilled the blood: The Greek word that the BSB translates as spilled is literally “poured out.” Both the Greek and the English phrase indicates that someone killed these believers because they believed in Jesus. God holds him or her or them responsible for killing these believers.

The use of the word blood is important here because it is used again in 16:6b. Other ways to translate this clause are:

they spilt the blood (NJB)

They poured out the blood (GNT)

They took the life-blood

In some languages a literal translation would not refer to killing. If that is true in your language, you should include that meaning in your translation. For example:

they killed them so that their blood poured out

they: This pronoun refers here to the people who had the mark of the beast (16:2).

saints and prophets: In the New Testament, the word saints refers generally to all believers. The prophets are a group of believers who prophesied.

saints: The Greek word that the BSB translates as saints means “holy ones.” The word refers to all believers. For example:

God’s people (GNT)

See how you translated this word in 5:8 or 14:12.

prophets: A prophet is a person to whom God gives a message. The message (often called a “prophecy”) may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. A prophecy may reveal something about past events, current events, or future events. The prophet speaks God’s message to the people or writes it down for their use. See how you translated this word in 2:20 or 11:18.

16:6b

and You have given them blood to drink, as they deserve.”

You have given them blood to drink: This clause refers to the third plague (16:4).

as they deserve: The word deserve refers to earning or being worthy of something. Since the people had killed believers, they deserved to receive punishment. For example:

It is their due! (RSV)

It is what they should get

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

αἷμα ἁγίων καὶ προφητῶν ἐξέχεαν

˓the˒_blood ˱of˲_holy_‹ones› blood (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι αἷμα ἁγίων καί προφητῶν ἐξέχεαν καί αἷμα αὐτοῖς δέδωκας πιεῖν ἀξιοῖ εἰσίν)

The angel is referring to the fact that these people killed the saints and prophets by association with the way they shed their blood* when they killed them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they shed the blood of the saints and prophets when they killed them]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἄξιοί εἰσιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι αἷμα ἁγίων καί προφητῶν ἐξέχεαν καί αἷμα αὐτοῖς δέδωκας πιεῖν ἀξιοῖ εἰσίν)

The angel of the waters means implicitly that the people who killed the saints and prophets are worthy of this punishment, that is, they deserve it. You can provide this information in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [They deserve this punishment]
