OET (OET-LV)And a_voice from the throne came_out saying:
Be_praising unto_the god of_us, all the slaves of_him, you_all revering him, the small and the great.

OET (OET-RV)Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all his slaves and everyone who respects him, both great and small.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 19:1–10: A huge crowd praised God

In this section, a huge crowd praised God because God had punished Babylon. The twenty-four elders in heaven and the four living creatures around the throne in heaven worshiped God in response.

Then a voice from the throne urged all who follow God to praise him. Another crowd (or possibly the same crowd as in 19:1–3) praised God for gathering believers to Jesus. This gathering was referred to as a wedding. An angel told John a message for him to write.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Crowds/Multitudes sang songs of victory and praise

Various groups sang songs of victory and praise

Rejoicing in Heaven (ESV)

19:5a

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

a voice came from the throne: John does not say who spoke here, but it does not refer to God (19:5b). Translate this phrase so that it refers to someone other than God. For example:

speech from the throne

someone said from the throne on God’s behalf

19:5b

“Praise our God, all you who serve Him, and those who fear Him, small and great alike!”

Praise our God, all you who serve Him, and those who fear Him, small and great alike!: The voice addresses all you who serve Him, and those who fear Him, small and great alike. This address comes after the command. In some languages it is more natural to have the address first. For example:

All you his servants, you who fear him, both small and great, praise our God!

all you who serve Him, and those who fear Him, small and great alike: These words refer to believers. The words describe them in three ways:

  1. They are his servants.

  2. They fear him.

  3. Some of them have low status, and some of them have high status.

Translate in a way that all three descriptions apply to believers. Other ways to translate these words are:

all his servants, all who fear him, from the least to the greatest (NLT)

all who serve and fear him, no matter who you are (GW)

all you his servants, indeed all who fear him, both lowly and great

those who fear Him: Here the word fear means “respect” or “revere.” People who fear God think about him in awe. They also realize he is all-powerful and can do as he chooses, so they respect him. This is not the type of fear that means “afraid” or “frightened.”

In some languages the word fear only means “be afraid.” If that is true in your language, you may want to:

small and great alike: This phrase refers to believers of low status and believers of high status. It implies people of all classes and position in society. The phrase does not refer to physical size. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

humble and great alike

both of high and lowly position/place

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

πάντες οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ, καὶ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν

all ¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί φωνή ἀπό τοῦ θρόνου ἐξῆλθεν λέγουσα Αἰνεῖτε τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν πάντες οἱ δουλοῖ αὐτοῦ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν οἱ μικροί καί οἱ μεγάλοι)

The voice is actually not speaking in the third person about the people whom he wants to Praise … God. The voice is using a vocative form. However, if your language does not have a vocative form and it might appear as if the voice is using the third person for people whom he is addressing, you could use the second person in your translation. Alternate translation: [you his servants and you who fear him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν

¬the you_all revering him

In this context, the word fearing does not mean to be afraid but to show respect and reverence. Alternate translation: [the ones who revere him] or [you who revere him]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

οἱ μικροὶ καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι

¬the you_all ¬the ¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί φωνή ἀπό τοῦ θρόνου ἐξῆλθεν λέγουσα Αἰνεῖτε τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν πάντες οἱ δουλοῖ αὐτοῦ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν οἱ μικροί καί οἱ μεγάλοι)

The voice is speaking as if unimportant people were literally small and as if important people were literally large or great. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the unimportant and the important]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

οἱ μικροὶ καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι

¬the you_all ¬the ¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί φωνή ἀπό τοῦ θρόνου ἐξῆλθεν λέγουσα Αἰνεῖτε τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν πάντες οἱ δουλοῖ αὐτοῦ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν οἱ μικροί καί οἱ μεγάλοι)

The voice is using the adjectives small and great as nouns to mean certain kinds of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate these words with equivalent phrases. Alternate translation: [both unimportant people and important people]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

οἱ μικροὶ καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι

¬the you_all ¬the ¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί φωνή ἀπό τοῦ θρόνου ἐξῆλθεν λέγουσα Αἰνεῖτε τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν πάντες οἱ δουλοῖ αὐτοῦ οἱ φοβούμενοι αὐτόν οἱ μικροί καί οἱ μεγάλοι)

The voice is using two extremes of people, small and great, to mean them and everyone in between. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [whatever your status]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:1-10 This section expands the message of the sixth song of response (18:20; see study note on 18:1-24), which called for rejoicing. Various groups direct praises to the Lord. The praises can be divided into two sections: thankfulness for the destruction of the evildoers (19:1-4) and thankfulness for the reward of God’s people (19:5-8).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
