OET (OET-LV)And he_is_saying to_me:
Write:
Blessed are the ones to the supper of_the wedding of_the lamb having_been_invited.
And he_is_saying to_me:
These the words true are.
of_ the _god.

OET (OET-RV)Then the messenger told me to write, “Everyone who’s invited to the lamb’s wedding reception is blessed.” And he added, “These are God’s true words.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 19:1–10: A huge crowd praised God

In this section, a huge crowd praised God because God had punished Babylon. The twenty-four elders in heaven and the four living creatures around the throne in heaven worshiped God in response.

Then a voice from the throne urged all who follow God to praise him. Another crowd (or possibly the same crowd as in 19:1–3) praised God for gathering believers to Jesus. This gathering was referred to as a wedding. An angel told John a message for him to write.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Crowds/Multitudes sang songs of victory and praise

Various groups sang songs of victory and praise

Rejoicing in Heaven (ESV)

19:9a

Then the angel told me to write,

the angel told me: The Greek word is literally “he-said.” Here “he” could refer to:

  1. Whoever spoke 19:6–8a. This being (or beings) had such a powerful voice that John described it as sounding like a great multitude (19:6a).

  2. Whoever spoke 19:5.

  3. Whoever spoke 19:1–3 or perhaps someone in chapter 18.

  4. The angel referred to in 17:1.

You should translate so that it allows any of these interpretations. The BSB and other English versions do so by not describing which angel this is.

to write: This word is a command to write the words spoken in 19:9b. For example:

Write this, (NJB)

19:9b

“Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

Blessed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Blessed describes a person who is in a good situation. In the Bible, the good situation results from God showing favor/kindness to the person. It also indicates that God approves of this kind of person.

This word does not primarily refer to a feeling. However, a person in this good situation will frequently have good feelings such as happiness and joy. Do not use a word that only refers to material prosperity or physical health.

Other ways to translate this word are:

Favored

How good it is

In a good/desirable position in God’s eyes

Shown kindness by God

See how you translated this word in 1:3 or 16:15.

those who are invited: The clause who are invited is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

those whom God has invited

invited: This word refers to God asking all believers to come to this celebration.

marriage supper: In Jewish custom, a large meal was part of the wedding celebration. Here, the time of day that the meal will be eaten is not implied or important. For example:

wedding supper (NIV)

the feast celebrating the marriage

19:9c

And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

he said to me: The Greek clause is literally “he says to me.” The pronoun he refers to the same speaker as in 19:9a. Also, this clause indicates that the command to write the exact words (19:9a–b) has ended but the person continued speaking. For example:

He also told me (GW)

These are the true words of God: This clause emphasizes that the words in 19:9b are indeed God’s words and that they are true. For example:

These things that God has said are true (CEV)

These: Here this word refers back to 19:9b. In some languages it is more natural to use “those” when referring back.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

λέγει

˱he˲_˓is˒_saying

The pronoun he probably refers to the same angel who began to speak to John in [17:1](../17/01.md). It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [The angel who told me he would show me the judgment of the great prostitute said]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

γράψον, μακάριοι οἱ εἰς τὸ δεῖπνον τοῦ γάμου τοῦ Ἀρνίου κεκλημένοι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί λέγει μοί Γράψον Μακάριοι οἱ εἰς τό δεῖπνον τοῦ γάμου τοῦ Ἀρνίου κεκλημένοι Καί λέγει μοί Οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι ἀληθινοί τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσίν)

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [Write that the ones having been invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb are blessed]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οἱ & κεκλημένοι

the_‹ones› & ˓having_been˒_invited

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the context suggests that it was God. Alternate translation: [the ones whom God has called]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι ἀληθινοὶ εἰσιν τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί λέγει μοί Γράψον Μακάριοι οἱ εἰς τό δεῖπνον τοῦ γάμου τοῦ Ἀρνίου κεκλημένοι Καί λέγει μοί Οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι ἀληθινοί τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσίν)

The angel is using the term words to mean the saying that he told John to Write by using words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [This is something that God has truly said]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
