Section 3:14–22: Jesus spoke to the church at Laodicea

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Laodicea. He knew that they believed in him but they were not serving him well. He warned them to stop being lazy and encouraged them to work properly for him. Lastly, he gave a promise to any believer who persevered in his faith.

Translate this section heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.

3:21a

To the one who overcomes,

To the one who overcomes: The phrase To the one who overcomes is emphasized by being first in the clause. Translate this phrase as you did in 2:7 or 2:26.

3:21b

I will grant the right to sit with Me on My throne,

3:21c

just as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

3:21b–c

I will grant the right to sit with Me on My throne: Here the word right refers to the privilege and authority to do something. Other ways to translate this clause are:

I will grant…permission to sit with me on my throne (NET)

I will allow to share my throne (NJB)

throne: A throne is the official chair of a king. It is a symbol of his power to rule. See how you translated throne in 1:4 or 2:13.

3:21a–c

(reordered) I will allow all of you(plur) who defeat all that causes a believer to stumble to rule with me, just as I defeated all enemies and now rule with my Father.

Jesus is speaking as if a victorious believer would literally sit with him on his throne. He means that the believer will share his ruling authority. He means the same thing when he says that he has sat with his Father on his throne. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I will share my ruling authority with him, as I also … have come to share my Father’s ruling authority]
