OET (OET-LV)The one overcoming, thus will_be_being_clothed in clothes white, and by_no_means not I_will_be_wiping_out the name of_him from the scroll of_ the _life, and I_will_be_confessing the name of_him before the father of_me, and before the messengers of_him.

OET (OET-RV)So anyone who conquers will be dressed like that in pure white, and I certainly won’t erase their names from the Book of Life, but I’ll declare their names to my father and to his messengers.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–6: Jesus spoke to the church at Sardis

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Sardis. He said that although people thought that the believers in Sardis trusted and obeyed him well, this was not true. He told them they must begin to truly trust and obey him again. He encouraged the believers who still completely trusted and obeyed him. Lastly, he gave a promise to any believer who persevered in his faith.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Message to Sardis (GNT)

Jesus gave a message for the church at Sardis

Advice to the group of believers at Sardis

Translate this heading as you did for the other messages to the churches (for example, Section 2:18–29).

3:5a

Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white.

Like them: The Greek phrase is literally “in similar manner.” This phrase refers to the believers dressed in white in 3:4b.

he who overcomes: The phrase he who overcomes is emphasized in the Greek by being first in the clause. If you have a natural way in your language to emphasize this phrase, you may want to do so. For example:

As for he who conquers, he

Regarding those who win the victory, they

In some languages it is not natural to emphasize this the phrase. For example:

The one who overcomes

See how you translated this phrase in 2:11.

overcomes: The word overcomes means “triumphs” or “obtains/wins victory.” Here the word refers to having success over sin, evil, and pressure to turn away from Jesus. Translate this phrase in a similar way to “the one who overcomes” in 2:26.

3:5b

And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life,

And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life: The phrase blot out means “remove.” Here Jesus promised that he will never remove the overcomer’s name from the Book of Life. For example:

I will not erase his name from the Book of Life. (NASB)

his name: This phrase refers to the name of anyone who is worthy. For example:

that name (NJB)

the Book of Life: This phrase refers to the Book that contains the names of people to whom God will give eternal Life. In some languages the meaning of the word of would not be clear here. If that is true in your language, explain the meaning in your translation. For example:

the book in which are the names of those who have eternal life

the book with/having the names of those to whom God will give eternal life

3:5c

but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels.

I will confess his name: Here the word confess means “publicly declare.” Jesus will announce that this person believes in him. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

claim him as my follower

announce…that they are mine (NLT)

declare openly that they belong to me (GNT)

before My Father and His angels: The phrase before My Father and His angels indicates that God and the angels will be watching and listening while Jesus acknowledges that the faithful overcomer believes in Jesus and therefore is worthy of eternal life. Another way to translate this is:

in the presence of my Father and the angels

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὕτως περιβαλεῖται ἐν ἱματίοις λευκοῖς

thus ˓will_be˒_being_clothed in clothes white

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [will wear white garments in this way]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐ μὴ ἐξαλείψω τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ νικῶν οὕτως περιβαλεῖται ἐν ἱματίοις λευκοῖς καί οὒ μή ἐξαλείψω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς βίβλου τῆς ζωῆς καί ὁμολογήσω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Πατρός μού καί ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ)

If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a positive expression to translate this double negative that consists of the negative particle not and the negative verb wipe out. Alternate translation: [I will certainly keep his name in the Book of Life]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ὁμολογήσω τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ

˱I˲_˓will_be˒_confessing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ νικῶν οὕτως περιβαλεῖται ἐν ἱματίοις λευκοῖς καί οὒ μή ἐξαλείψω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς βίβλου τῆς ζωῆς καί ὁμολογήσω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Πατρός μού καί ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ)

Here, name represents a person by association with the way that each person has a name. Alternate translation: [I will acknowledge him] or [I will acknowledge that he belongs to me]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιον τοῦ Πατρός μου, καὶ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ

before the Father before (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ νικῶν οὕτως περιβαλεῖται ἐν ἱματίοις λευκοῖς καί οὒ μή ἐξαλείψω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς βίβλου τῆς ζωῆς καί ὁμολογήσω τό ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Πατρός μού καί ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ)

Here the word before means “in front of” or “in the presence of” another person. Alternate translation: [in the presence of my Father and in the presence of his angels]

Note 5 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

τοῦ Πατρός

the Father

Father is an important title that describes the relationship between God and Jesus. Be sure to retain this title in your translation.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ

the angels ˱of˲_him

See how you translated angel in [1:20](../01/20.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:5 Having one’s name recorded in the Book of Life (see 20:12-15; Dan 7:10) symbolizes having assurance of God’s acceptance and eternal life (see Rev 17:8; 20:12; Phil 4:3; see also Luke 10:20). For God to erase a name implies condemnation and eternal death (see Exod 32:32-33; Ps 69:28).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
