SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:14–22: Jesus spoke to the church at Laodicea

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Laodicea. He knew that they believed in him but they were not serving him well. He warned them to stop being lazy and encouraged them to work properly for him. Lastly, he gave a promise to any believer who persevered in his faith.

Translate this section heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.

3:19a

Those I love, I rebuke and discipline.

Those I love, I rebuke and discipline: The phrase Those I love is emphasized in the Greek and the BSB. If possible, emphasize this phrase naturally in your language.

In some languages it is more natural to put this clause in its usual place. For example:

I rebuke and discipline those whom I love

love: This word refers to active concern for another’s well-being.

rebuke: This word refers here to telling someone that they have sinned and need to repent. Other ways to translate this word are:

reprove (RSV)

correct (GW)

discipline: This word refers to training or punishing someone who has sinned. The goal of discipline is for that person to stop sinning and do things the correct way. Other ways to translate this word are:

chasten (RSV)

punish (GNT)

train (NJB)

3:19b

Therefore be earnest and repent.

be earnest: The Greek word that the BSB translates as be earnest refers to being eager or diligent to do something. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

be diligent (NLT)

be eager (NCV)

repent: See how you translated this word in 2:5 or 3:3.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐγὼ ὅσους ἐὰν φιλῶ, ἐλέγχω καὶ παιδεύω

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐγώ ὅσους ἐάν φιλῶ ἐλέγχω καί παιδεύω ζήλευε οὖν καί μετανόησον)

For emphasis, Jesus is stating the pronoun I, whose meaning is already present in the verbs rebuke and discipline. If your language can state implied pronouns explicitly for emphasis, you may want to use that construction here in your translation. Other languages may have other ways of expressing this emphasis. Alternate translation: [I certainly rebuke and discipline as many as I love]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἐλέγχω καὶ παιδεύω

˱I˲_˓am˒_rebuking (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐγώ ὅσους ἐάν φιλῶ ἐλέγχω καί παιδεύω ζήλευε οὖν καί μετανόησον)

The terms rebuke and discipline mean similar things. Jesus is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [diligently correct]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

ζήλευε & καὶ μετανόησον

˓be˒_being_zealous & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐγώ ὅσους ἐάν φιλῶ ἐλέγχω καί παιδεύω ζήλευε οὖν καί μετανόησον)

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The verb be zealous tells how Jesus wants the Laodiceans to repent. If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this meaning with an equivalent phrase that does not use “and.” Alternate translation: [repent zealously]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:19 Christ will correct and discipline those whom he loves (Prov 3:11-12; Heb 12:5-6), rather than rejecting them. His faithfulness extends even to the unfaithful (2 Tim 2:13).
