The Gibeonites could mean: (1) that there is not a man (that is, there is no one) in their people group who is authorized to kill anyone in Israel. In other words, since they apparently do not have the right to execute Israelites who may have committed capital crimes against them, they are indirectly introducing a request that David execute some of Saul’s descendants. (The next sentence shows that David recognizes they are asking something of him.) Alternate translation: [And we are not allowed to punish any Israelites by executing them]; (2) that the Gibeonites are making a generalization and they expect David to understand that it includes an exception. Alternate translation: [And we do not want to kill anyone in Israel except some of Saul’s descendants to avenge his crime against us]
