OET (OET-RV) (The Gibeonites were not native Israelis, but were a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelis had promised to protect them, but Sha’ul had attempted to eliminate them in his zeal for the people of Yisrael and Yehudah.) So the king summoned the Gibeonites and asked them,

The author is saying the Gibeonites as a generalization. He does not mean that David spoke with the entire people group, but with some representatives of it. Alternate translation: [representatives of the Gibeonites]

Here, the author is providing background information to help readers understand what happens next in the story. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.

The author assumes that readers will know that the Israelites had sworn to protect the Gibeonites and not kill them, as recorded in [Joshua 9](../../jos/09/01.md). You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [And the sons of Israel had sworn to them that they would spare their lives]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

The author is speaking as if the people of Israel and Judah were actually the sons of the patriarch Jacob, who was also known as Israel, and the patriarch Judah. If you have already translated the book of 1 Samuel, see how you translated the similar expression in [1 Samuel 2:28](../../1sa/02/28.md). Alternate translation: [the Israelites … the Israelites and Judeans]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
הָאֱמֹרִ֔י
the=ʼAmorī
The author is not referring to a specific Amorite. He means Amorites in general. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use an expression that would be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: [the Amorites]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

See the discussion in the Introduction to this chapter of the term strike and its past form “struck,” which mean “kill” or “killed” here and in several other places in the chapter. Alternate translation: [to kill them]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
