The author assumes that readers will know that the Israelites had sworn to protect the Gibeonites and not kill them, as recorded in [Joshua 9](../../jos/09/01.md). The author is speaking as if the people of Israel and Judah were actually the sons of the patriarch Jacob, who was also known as Israel, and the patriarch Judah.
