uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בִּילִידֵ֣י הָרָפָ֗ה

(Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

Here, the author is speaking of the children of Rapha as if Rapha were actually their physical father. He means they were among the descendants of Rapha, the group of giants called Raphaites. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly, here and in [verses 18](../21/18.md), [20](../21/20.md), and [22](../21/22.md). Alternate translation: [was one of the descendants of Rapha] or [was a Raphaite]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

וּמִשְׁקַ֤ל קֵינוֹ֙ שְׁלֹ֤שׁ מֵאוֹת֙ מִשְׁקַ֣ל נְחֹ֔שֶׁת

(Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

It might seem that the expression 300 shekels of bronze in weight contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you could shorten it. Alternate translation: [and the weight of his spear was 300 shekels of bronze]

Note 3 topic: translate-bweight

שְׁלֹ֤שׁ מֵאוֹת֙ & נְחֹ֔שֶׁת

(Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

These 300 shekels of bronze equaled about 3 ½ kilograms or nearly 8 pounds. In your translation, you could use the ancient measurement and spell the word “shekel” the way it sounds in your language. You could also use the metric measurement given in the UST or use the measurement that your language and culture customarily use. Alternatively, you could use the ancient measurement and put a modern measurement in parentheses in the text or in a footnote.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְה֖וּא חָג֣וּר חֲדָשָׁ֑ה

and=he armed (Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

The expression was girded is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and he was bearing a new weapon]

Note 5 topic: translate-textvariants

חֲדָשָׁ֑ה

(Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

The traditional Hebrew text simply says “new.” The ULT seeks to show what that reading might mean. Some versions are more specific and say “a new sword” or “new armor.” The Septuagint (an ancient Greek translation) has a term that means “a club” or “a mace” (a club with an iron coating or head). This suggests that the original text could have named some rare but formidable weapon whose name was not preserved exactly in the traditional text. (The context suggests that Ishbi Benob believed he could kill David because he had such a weapon.) If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 6 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְהַכּ֥וֹת אֶת־דָּוִֽד

(Some words not found in UHB: and, -benob which/who [was]_among,those_born_of of,the_Raphah and,the_weight_of his_spear_of,his three hundreds shekels_of copper/brass/bronze//coin and=he armed new and=he/it_said to,strike_down DOM Dāvid )

See how you translated the similar expression in [10:2](../10/02.md). Alternate translation: [and he said to himself, “I will strike David”] or [and he thought he would strike David]
