TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:10 Solomon received wisdom and knowledge so he could govern (Hebrew shapat) well. The word shapat, often rendered “judge” (e.g., in Judges), can also mean “govern.”

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) give me wisdom and knowledge

(Some words not found in UHB: now wisdom and,knowledge give to=me and,go_out to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the,people the=this and,come_in that/for/because/then/when who? judge DOM people,yours the=this the,great )

This can be restated to remove the abstract nouns “wisdom” and “knowledge.” Alternate translation: “cause me to be wise and to know many things”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) who can judge your people, who are so many in number?

(Some words not found in UHB: now wisdom and,knowledge give to=me and,go_out to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the,people the=this and,come_in that/for/because/then/when who? judge DOM people,yours the=this the,great )

Here “judge” means to govern or rule. Solomon uses a question to state that it is impossible to rule over so many people without God’s help. Alternate translation: “no one can judge all of your countless people without your help.”
