TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:15-31 Nehemiah instituted two additional reforms to restore proper Sabbath observance (13:15-22) and proper marriage practices (13:23-31). These two sections have similar structures: Nehemiah discovered a problem, corrected the problem, and asked God for his blessing.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

וְלָכֶ֣ם הֲנִשְׁמַ֗ע לַעֲשֹׂת֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל־הָרָעָ֤ה הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את לִמְעֹ֖ל בֵּֽאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ לְהֹשִׁ֖יב נָשִׁ֥ים נָכְרִיּֽוֹת

and,to,you_all ?,hear to,do DOM all/each/any/every the,evil the,great the,this by,acting_unfaithfully in/on/at/with,God,our by,marrying women/wives foreign

Nehemiah uses a question form for emphasis once again as he continues to scold these men. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate what he says as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: “We will not accept your excuses and allow you to keep doing this thing that is so wrong”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְלָכֶ֣ם הֲנִשְׁמַ֗ע

and,to,you_all ?,hear

As in 9:16 and 9:29, listen in this context is an idiom that means not just to hear a statement about a course of action, but to agree to follow it. If your language has a word for “listen” that also means “agree,” you could use it here. Alternate translation: “we will not heed your words”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

כָּל־הָרָעָ֤ה הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את

all/each/any/every the,evil the,great the,this

Here, the word all does not indicate the entirety of something. Instead, it expresses emphasis. Alternate translation: “this thing that is so wrong”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לִמְעֹ֖ל בֵּֽאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ לְהֹשִׁ֖יב נָשִׁ֥ים נָכְרִיּֽוֹת

by,acting_unfaithfully in/on/at/with,God,our by,marrying women/wives foreign

Here acting unfaithfully means violating the Law of Moses. Nehemiah assumes that these men will know that the law forbade the Israelites to marry outside their people group. (In fact, the law does so using language very much like the oath that Nehemiah made these men swear, for example, “Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,” Deuteronomy 7:3.) If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say this explicitly. Alternate translation: “By marrying foreign women, you are breaking the law that God gave us”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לְהֹשִׁ֖יב

by,marrying

As in 13:23, this is an expression that refers to marriage. Alternate translation: “marrying”
