Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

19:11-12 When David realized that the northern tribes would welcome him (19:9-10), he sent emissaries to goad Judah, his own tribesmen, into welcoming him as well. See also study note on 19:41-43.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) You are my brothers, my flesh and bone

(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,king Dāvid Shalah to/towards Tsādōq/(Zadok) and=near/to ʼEⱱyātār the,priests to=say say to/towards elders_of Yehuda to=say to/for=what be last to,bring_~_back DOM the=king to/towards house_of,his and,talk_of all/each/any/every Yisrael he/it_came to/towards the=king to/towards house_of,his )

The king uses these to phrases to emphasize that they are closely related. Being or having the same flesh is a metaphor for belonging to the same family or tribe. Alternate translation: “You are my brothers, and we have the same flesh and bone” or “You are my brothers, my close relatives”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Why then are you the last to bring back the king?

(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,king Dāvid Shalah to/towards Tsādōq/(Zadok) and=near/to ʼEⱱyātār the,priests to=say say to/towards elders_of Yehuda to=say to/for=what be last to,bring_~_back DOM the=king to/towards house_of,his and,talk_of all/each/any/every Yisrael he/it_came to/towards the=king to/towards house_of,his )

This is the second rhetorical question here and it is also a rebuke for the elders of Judah. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “You should have been the first, not the last, to bring back the king.”
