UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְשָׁ֨ם נִקְרָ֜א אִ֣ישׁ בְּלִיַּ֗עַל

(Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

See how you translated the similar expression in [18:9](../18/09.md). Alternate translation: [And a man of wickedness happened to be there]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

אִ֣ישׁ בְּלִיַּ֗עַל

(a)_man (a)_man (Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of wickedness, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [a wicked man]

Note 3 topic: writing-participants

וּשְׁמ֛וֹ שֶׁ֥בַע בֶּן־בִּכְרִ֖י אִ֣ישׁ יְמִינִ֑י

(Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

Here the author is introducing Sheba, the son of Bichri, a man of Benjamin as a new participant in the story. Your language may have its own way of introducing new participants that you can use in your translation.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

אֵֽין־לָ֨נוּ חֵ֜לֶק בְּדָוִ֗ד וְלֹ֤א נַֽחֲלָה־לָ֨נוּ֙ בְּבֶן־יִשַׁ֔י

not to/for=us portion (Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

If Sheba were speaking to the Judeans with whom he and his fellow Israelites have been disputing, the word us would not include them, so it would be appropriate to use the exclusive form of that word if your language marks that distinction. That is one interpretive possibility. However, since he directly addresses his fellow Israelites in the next sentence, he may well also be addressing them here, in which case it would be appropriate to use the inclusive form. Decide as a translation team which interpretation you wish to follow.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

These two phrases There is no portion to us in David and no inheritance is to us in the son of Jesse mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [We will have no part of David son of Jesse]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

Sheba is speaking as if David were actually land or property of which the Israelites could have a portion that they would receive as an inheritance. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [We want nothing to do with David son of Jesse]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָ֖יו יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

(a)_man to,tents_of,his (Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

Sheba is using a man to his tent as a common expression of his culture that often described soldiers stopping a military campaign altogether and each one going back to his home and family. In this particular context, Sheba is using the expression to mean that the soldiers from the other tribes will not obey David as their military commander. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Abandon the army and go home, Israel!]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

אִ֣ישׁ & אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָ֖יו יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

(a)_man & (a)_man to,tents_of,his (Some words not found in UHB: and=there happened_to_be (a)_man worthless and=his/its=name seven son_of Bikrī (a)_man Jamite and,he_gave_a_blast on,trumpet and=he/it_said not to/for=us portion in,David and=not inheritance to/for=us in,the_son_of Yishay/(Jesse) (a)_man to,tents_of,his Yisrael )

Here, tents represents homes or dwelling places. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [Each of you return to his own home, you Israelites]
