OET (OET-LV)For/Because these are_ not _being_drunk as you_all are_supposing, because/for it_is the_ third _hour, of_the day,

OET (OET-RV)This group is not drunk like you’re all thinking, because it’s still mid-morning,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

for

Peter says for in this first instance to introduce the reason why the crowd should listen to him. Alternate translation: “You should listen to me because”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

οὗτοι

these

The demonstrative pronoun these refers to the disciples who are speaking different languages. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could add more information to clarify the meaning. Alternate translation: “these people who are speaking different languages”

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

(Occurrence 2) γὰρ

for

Peter says for in this second instance to introduce the reason why the people speaking different languages are not drunk. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “They are not drunk, because”

(Occurrence 2) ἔστιν & ὥρα τρίτη τῆς ἡμέρας

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐ γὰρ ὡς ὑμεῖς ὑπολαμβάνετε οὗτοι μεθύουσιν ἔστιν γὰρ ὥρα τρίτη τῆς ἡμέρας)

In this culture, people began counting the hours each day beginning around daybreak at six o’clock in the morning. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this in the way the people of your culture reckon time. Alternate translation: “it is nine o’clock in the morning”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἔστιν & ὥρα τρίτη τῆς ἡμέρας

˱it˲_is & /the/_hour third ˱of˲_the day

Peter assumes that his listeners will know that people do not get drunk that early in the day. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: “it is only nine o’clock in the morning, and people do not get drunk that early”

Note 5 topic: translate-ordinal

ὥρα τρίτη τῆς ἡμέρας

/the/_hour third ˱of˲_the day

If you decide to translate this in the way that the biblical culture reckoned time, but your language does not use ordinal numbers, you could use a cardinal number here. Alternate translation: “hour three of the day”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:14-36 This is the first of about thirty speeches in Acts and one of the most important, standing as it does at the very inception of the church. It is a typical example of the preaching of the apostles, who proclaimed (1) that the Old Testament promises had been fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is the promised Messiah; (2) that the apostles themselves were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ entire public ministry and were his chosen representatives; (3) that people are called to repent of their sins and have faith in God through Christ; and (4) that salvation and the presence of the Holy Spirit are promised to those who respond affirmatively to this message of Good News. This basic message is echoed in the sermons of chs 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13. The same themes characterized Paul’s preaching (see 1 Cor 15:3-9). This message was repeatedly preached to both Jews and Gentiles throughout the Mediterranean world; all people are summoned to repent of their sins and turn to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
