OET (OET-LV)The sun will_be_being_altered into darkness and the moon into blood, before the_ the great and glorious _day of_the_master to_come.

OET (OET-RV)I’ll make the sun go dark and the moon go blood red. This will happen before the great victorious day of the coming of the master.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα, πρὶν ἢ ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐπιφανῆ

the sun /will_be_being/_altered into darkness and the moon into blood before (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα πρὶν ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐπιφανῆ)

You may have decided to turn Peter’s quotation from Joel into an indirect quotation in order to avoid having a second-level quotation. Alternate translation: “God said that sun would be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood before the great and remarkable day of the Lord came”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος

the sun /will_be_being/_altered into darkness

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “I will turn the sun to darkness” or, if you are making this an indirect quotation, “God said that he would turn the sun to darkness”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος

the sun /will_be_being/_altered into darkness

God is speaking as if he would change the sun into something else. Alternate translation: “The sun will become dark” or “The sun will no longer shine brightly”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος

the sun /will_be_being/_altered into darkness

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word darkness, you could express the same idea with an adjective such as “dark.” Alternate translation: “The sun will become dark”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα

and the moon into blood

Here some words have been left out that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. You can supply these words from earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: “and the moon will be turned to blood”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα

and the moon into blood

If you decide to supply words as the previous note suggests, but your language does not use passive verbal forms, you could use an active form. Alternate translation: “and I will turn the moon to blood” or, if you are making this an indirect quotation, “and that he would turn the moon to blood”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα

and the moon into blood

God is speaking as if he would change the moon into something else. Alternate translation: “and the moon will look like blood” or “and the moon will appear to be red”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἡμέραν & τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐπιφανῆ

/the/_day & ¬the great and glorious

The words great and remarkable mean similar things. They are being used together for emphasis. Alternate translation: “the very great day” or “the truly remarkable day”

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου

/to/_come /the/_day ˱of˲_/the/_Lord

This is an expression that many of the prophets use. It refers to the time when God will judge and punish people for their sins. Alternate translation: “the time when the Lord judges and punishes people for their sins”

Note 10 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου

/to/_come /the/_day ˱of˲_/the/_Lord

In this expression, God is speaking of himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use the first person in your translation. Alternate translation: “time arrives when I judge and punish people for their sins”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:14-36 This is the first of about thirty speeches in Acts and one of the most important, standing as it does at the very inception of the church. It is a typical example of the preaching of the apostles, who proclaimed (1) that the Old Testament promises had been fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is the promised Messiah; (2) that the apostles themselves were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ entire public ministry and were his chosen representatives; (3) that people are called to repent of their sins and have faith in God through Christ; and (4) that salvation and the presence of the Holy Spirit are promised to those who respond affirmatively to this message of Good News. This basic message is echoed in the sermons of chs 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13. The same themes characterized Paul’s preaching (see 1 Cor 15:3-9). This message was repeatedly preached to both Jews and Gentiles throughout the Mediterranean world; all people are summoned to repent of their sins and turn to God through faith in Jesus Christ.

OET (OET-RV)I’ll make the sun go dark and the moon go blood red. This will happen before the great victorious day of the coming of the master.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
