OET (OET-LV)Therefore if you_all_may_be_observing the son of_ the _Man, going_up where he_was the earlier?

OET (OET-RV)What if you were to see humanity’s child ascending to where he came from?

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἐὰν & θεωρῆτε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου, ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον?

if & ˱you_all˲_/may_be/_observing the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man going_up where ˱he˲_was ¬the earlier

Here, John records Jesus using only one part of a conditional sentence. He leaves out the second part of the conditional sentence for emphasis. Many languages need to have both parts of a conditional sentence in order to make the sentence complete. If this is true for your language, you could supply the second clause from the previous verse. Alternate translation: [if you would see the Son of Man going up to where he was before, would it offend you?]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου, ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον

the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man going_up where ˱he˲_was ¬the earlier

Jesus is speaking of himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person, as in the UST.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου

the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man

See how you translated this phrase in 1:51.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον

where ˱he˲_was ¬the earlier

This phrase refers to heaven, where Jesus was before he came down to earth. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [to heaven, where I used to be]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:1-71 Each story in this chapter uses the setting of the Passover Festival (6:4) to communicate a deeper meaning.

OET (OET-RV)What if you were to see humanity’s child ascending to where he came from?

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
