6:1 The feeding of 5,000 families

(Mat. 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17)

6After all this, Yeshua crossed the lake in a boat.[fn] 2A large crowd followed him because they’d seen his miraculous healings of sick people. 3Yeshua climbed a hill and sat there with his apprentices. 4At that time, it was getting close to the Jewish Festival of Passover. 5When Yeshua looked out and saw the large crowd coming, he asked Philip, “Where can we get enough food from to feed all this crowd? 6But he was only saying this to test Philip because he already knew what he was going to do.

7Philip answered, “To buy even just a snack for this many people would take several months’ wages!”

8Now one of Yeshua’s apprentices, Simon Peter’s brother, Andrew, said to Yeshua, 9“There’s a young boy here with five buns and two small cooked fish, but that wouldn’t even start to feed this crowd.”

10But Yeshua told them to get all the people to sit down as there was a large grassy area. So they all sat down—some five thousand men were counted. 11Then he took the buns and gave thanks to God, and started passing around both the buns and the fish, and everyone ate as much as they wanted. 12Once everyone was full, Yeshua got his apprentices to collect the leftover fragments so as not to waste anything. 13So they gathered the leftovers and filled twelve baskets with leftover bread.

14The people who had witnessed this and other miracles said, “This really is the prophet that God promised to send!” 15But Yeshua knew that they intended to come and grab him to proclaim him as their king, so he moved out of the crowd and on up the hill.

6After these things, the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) went_away across the sea of_ the _Galilaia/(Gālīl) of_ the _Tiberios.
2And a_ great _crowd was_following after_him, because they_were_observing the signs which he_was_doing with the ones ailing.
3And Yaʸsous went_up into the mountain, and he_was_sitting there with the apprentices/followers of_him.
4And the passover_feast was near, the feast of_the Youdaiōns.
5Therefore the Yaʸsous having_lifted_up his eyes, and having_seen that a_great crowd is_coming to him, he_is_saying to Filippos:
From_where may_we_buy loaves, in_order_that may_eat these?
6for/because he_was_saying this testing him, And he had_known what he_was_going to_be_doing.
7Filippos answered to_him:
For/Because_two_hundred daʸnarion_coins are_ not _sufficing loaves for_them, that each may_receive little thing.
8one of the apprentices/followers of_him, Andreas the brother of_Simōn Petros Is_saying to_him, 9Here is a_little_boy, who is_having five loaves of_barley and two fish, but what is these for so_many?
10the Yaʸsous Said:
Make the people to_sit_down.
And there_was grass much in the place.
Therefore the men sat_down, the number about five_thousand.
11therefore the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) Took the loaves, and having_given_thanks, he_distributed to_the ones reclining, likewise also of the fish, as_much_as they_were_wanting.
12And when they_were_filled, he_is_saying to_the apprentices/followers of_him:
Gather_together the fragments having_been_leftover in_order_that not anything may_lose.
13Therefore they_gathered_together and they_filled twelve baskets of_fragments from the five the barley loaves, which they_were_leftover to_the ones having_eaten.
14Therefore the people having_seen what signs he_did were_saying, that This is truly the prophet who coming into the world.
15Therefore Yaʸsous having_known that they_are_going to_be_coming and to_be_snatching him, in_order_that they_may_make him king, he_ himself only _withdrew again to the mountain.

6:16 Yeshua comes walking across the lake

(Mat. 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52)

16As it moved into evening, Yeshua’s apprentices went back down to the lake 17and having boarded the boat, they set out across the lake toward Capernaum. By then it was dark, and there was still no sign of Yeshua. 18Then a strong wind hit the lake and the water got rough. 19When they had rowed about five kilometres, they saw Yeshua walking on top of the lake and approaching the boat, and they were very scared. 20But he told them, “Don’t worry—it’s me. 21After that they were willing to let him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at their arrival place.

22The next day, the crowd looked across the lake and saw that only one small boat had crossed, and they knew that only Yeshua’s apprentices had boarded that boat and left, and not Yeshua himself. 23Other boats came across from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread after the master had given thanks. 24So when all the people saw that Yeshua wasn’t around and his apprentices had left, they went off looking for Yeshua in Capernaum.

16And when it_became evening, the apprentices/followers of_him came_down to the sea, 17and having_boarded into the_boat, they_were_coming across the sea to Kafarnaʼoum.
And darkness already had_become, and the Yaʸsous had_ not_yet _come to them.
18And the sea was_being_awoke by_a_ great _wind blowing.
19Therefore having_rowed about twenty five or thirty stadiums, they_are_observing the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) walking on the sea, and becoming near the boat, and they_were_afraid.
20But he is_saying to_them:
I am he, be_ not _fearing.
21Therefore they_were_willing to_receive him into the boat, and immediately the boat became at the land to which they_were_going.
22On_the_ of_next _day the crowd which having_stood across of_the sea, saw that no other little_boat was there except not/lest one, and that the Yaʸsous not entered_with with_the apprentices/followers of_him into the boat, but only the apprentices/followers of_him went_away, 23other boats came from Tiberios, near the place where they_ate the bread, having_ master the _given_thanks.
24Therefore when the crowd saw that Yaʸsous is not there, nor the apprentices/followers of_him, they boarded into the little_boats, and they_came to Kafarnaʼoum seeking the Yaʸsous.

6:25 The bread that enables true life

25When they found him there across the lake, they queried, “Teacher, how did you get here?”

26Honestly, I know that you’re not looking for me because you saw God working miracles,Yeshua answered, “but because you all had plenty of food to fill you up. 27Don’t just work for the food which goes off, but for the food which lasts forever—the food which humanity’s child will give to you because God the father has put his mark of approval on him.

28Puzzled, they asked him, “What should we be doing if we want to work for God?”

29He answered, “Doing God’s work is putting your trust in the one that he sent here.

30“If so,” they said, “what miracle will you do for us to see so that we can believe that you came from God? What can you do? 31[ref]Our ancestors ate the manna[fn] out in the wilderness, just like Mosheh wrote, ‘He gave them bread from the sky to eat.’ ”

32Yeshua said to them, “Actually I can tell you that it wasn’t Mosheh who gave them bread from heaven, but my father gives you the real bread from heaven, 33because God’s bread is the one who came down from heaven and who gives life to the world.

34So they requested, “Mister, keep giving us that bread.”

35I am the bread that gives life,Yeshua answered, “anyone who comes to me will never hunger, and the one believing in me, will never be thirsty again. 36But as I said already, although you have seen me you refuse to believe me. 37Everyone that the father gives to me will come to me, and I certainly won’t turn away anyone who comes to me, 38because I came down from heaven, not to do what I want, but to do what the one who sent me wants. 39And what he wants is for me to not lose anyone that he’s given to me, but to bring them back to life on the last day. 40My father wants everyone who watches me and believes in me to live forever, because I will bring them back to life on that final day.

41This little speech made the religious leaders grumble about him because he had said that he was the food that came down from heaven, 42as they figured out, “This is Yeshua the son of Yosef and so we know his parents. So how can he say that he came down from heaven?”

43Yeshua scolded them, “Don’t be grumbling to each other. 44No one can join me unless the father who sent me attracts them, and then I’ll be bringing them back to life on that final day. 45[ref]The prophets wrote that the people will be taught by God. And everyone who’s heard and learned from the father comes to me. 46Not that any person has seen the father—only the one who came from God has seen him. 47I tell you sincerely: anyone who believes in me will live forever. 48I am the bread that gives true life. 49Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all went on to die. 50But I am the bread that came down from heaven and anyone who eats this will not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven and if anyone eats this bread, he will live through to the next age.

52At this point, the religious leaders began to argue with each other, “How could this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53So Yeshua explained, “Indeed if you don’t eat my flesh and drink my blood, you aren’t truly alive! 54Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood will gain eternal life—I will bring them back to life on that final day. 55For my flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. 56Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I will live in him. 57The father is alive and sent me here, and I am alive because of Him, so also the person who eats me will be alive because of me. 58Unlike your ancestors who ate that bread from the sky and then died, anyone who eats this bread that came down from heaven will live through to the next age.

25And having_found him across of_the sea, they_said to_him:
My_great_one, when have_you_become here?
26The Yaʸsous answered to_them and said:
Truly, truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, you_all_are_seeking me, not because you_all_saw signs, but because you_all_ate of the loaves and were_satisfied.
27Be_ not _working for_the which perishing food, but the food which remaining to eternal life, which the son of_ the _man will_be_giving to_you_all, because/for the god the father sealed this one.
28Therefore they_said to him:
What may_we_be_doing, in_order_that we_may_be_doing the works of_ the _god?
29the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) Answered and said to_them:
This is the work of_ the _god, that you_all_may_be_believing in whom that one sent_out.
30Therefore they_said to_him:
Therefore what sign are_doing you, in_order_that we_may_see and we_may_believe in_you?
What are_you_doing?
31The fathers of_us ate the manna in the wilderness, as is having_been_written:
he_gave bread out_of the heaven to_them to_eat.
32Therefore the Yaʸsous said to_them:
Truly, truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, Mōsaʸs/(Mosheh) has_ not _given to_you_all the bread out_of the heaven, but the father of_me is_giving to_you_all the the true bread out_of the heaven.
33For/Because the bread of_ the _god is the one coming_down out_of the heaven, and giving life to_the world.
34Therefore they_said to him:
Master, always give this the bread to_us.
35the Yaʸsous said to_them:
I am the bread of_ the _life, the one coming to me, by_no_means may_ not _hunger, and the one believing in me, by_no_means will_ not ever _be_thirsting.
36But I_said to_you_all that you_all_ both _have_seen me and you_all_are_ not _believing.
37Everything that the father is_giving to_me, will_be_coming to me, and the one coming to me, by_no_means I_may_ not _throw_out out.
38Because I_have_came_down from the heaven, not in_order_that I_may_be_doing the my the will, but the will of_the one having_sent me.
39And this is the will of_the one having_sent me, that everything which he_has_given to_me, I_may_ not _lose of it, but I_will_be_raising_ it _up on_the last day.
40For/Because this is the will of_the father of_me, that everyone which observing the son and believing in him, may_be_having eternal life, and I will_be_raising_ him _up on_the last day.
41therefore the Youdaiōns /Were/_grumbling about him, because he_said:
I am the bread the one having_come_down out_of the heaven.
42And they_were_saying, is this Not Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) the son of_Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf), of_whose the father and the mother we have_known?
How now is_he_saying, that I_have_came_down out_of the heaven?
43Yaʸsous Answered and said to_them:
Be_ not _grumbling with one_another.
44No_one is_able to_come to me, if not the father, the one having_sent me, may_draw him, and_I will_be_raising_ him _up the last day.
45It_is having_been_written in the prophets:
And they_will_ all _be taught of_god.
Everyone which having_heard from the father and having_learned, is_coming to me.
46Not that anyone has_seen the father, except not/lest the one being from the god, this one has_seen the father.
47Truly, truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, the one believing is_having eternal life.
48I am the bread of_ the _life.
49The fathers of_you_all ate the manna in the wilderness, and they_died_off.
50This is the bread which coming_down out_of the heaven, in_order_that anyone may_eat of it, and may_ not _die_off.
51I am the which living bread which having_come_down out_of the heaven, if anyone may_eat of this the bread, he_will_be_living to the age.
The even and bread that I will_be_giving, is the flesh of_me.
for the life of_the world.
52Therefore the Youdaiōns were_quarrelling with one_another saying:
How is_ this one _able to_give to_us the flesh of_him to_eat?
53Therefore the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) said to_them:
Truly, truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, if not you_all_may_eat the flesh of_the son of_ the _Man, and you_all_may_drink of_him the blood, you_all_are_ not _having life in yourselves.
54The one eating the flesh of_me, and drinking the blood of_me, is_having eternal life, and_I will_be_raising_up him at_the last day.
55For/Because the flesh of_me is true food, and the blood of_me is true drink.
56The one eating the flesh of_me, and drinking the blood of_me, is_remaining in me, and_I in him.
57As the living father sent_ me _out, and_I am_living because_of the father, also the one eating me, and_that one will_be_living because_of me.
58This is the bread which having_come_down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and they_died_off, the one eating this the bread will_be_living to the age.

6:59 Many people find the teaching too difficult

59Yeshua taught all of this in the meeting hall there in Capernaum. 60But even many of his followers who heard it said, “This is difficult teaching—it’s too hard to take.”

61But Yeshua already knew inside that his followers were grumbling about this and asked them, “Do you find this offensive? 62What if you were to see humanity’s child ascending to where he came from? 63It’s the spirit that is the source of life, not the body. The concepts that I’ve taught you are all spiritual and life-giving. 64But there are some here who don’t believe me.” Actually, Yeshua had already known from the beginning just who would believe and which person would betray him 65so he said, “That’s why I told you that no one can come to me unless the father has given them to me.

66After this, many of his followers went back and no longer accompanied him around.

67So Yeshua said to his twelve apprentices, “Don’t you want to leave as well?

68[ref]Master,” Simon answered, “if we went, who would we follow then? You’re the only one who teaches about living forever. 69We believe and know that you are the holy son of God.”

70Yeshua responded, “Didn’t I choose all twelve of you myself? And yet one of you is a devil. 71(He was talking about Yudas, Simon Iscariot’s son, because he was the one who would go on to betray him.)

6:1 Here Yohan also uses the Roman name “Lake Tiberias” rather than just “Lake Galilee”.

6:31 Manna was a word that meant ‘stuff’ and referred to some kind of flakes that regularly came down from the sky in the time of Mosheh and could be eaten as food.

59He_said these things in the_synagogue, teaching in Kafarnaʼoum.
60Therefore many of the apprentices/followers having_heard of_him said, this the message is hard, who is_able to_be_hearing of_it?
61But the Yaʸsous having_known in himself that the apprentices/followers of_him are_grumbling about this, he_said to_them:
This is_offending you_all?
62Therefore if you_all_may_be_observing the son of_ the _Man, going_up where he_was the earlier?
63The spirit is which giving_life, the flesh is_ not _benefiting nothing.
The messages which I have_spoken to_you_all is spirit and is life.
64But there_are some, of you_all who are_ not _believing.
For/Because the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) had_known from the_beginning, who_all are the ones not believing, and who is the one going_to_give_ him _over.
65And he_was_saying:
Because_of this I_have_said to_you_all that no_one is_able to_come to me, if may_be having_ not _been_given to_him from the father.
66From this many out_of of_the apprentices/followers of_him went_away to the things back, and no_longer were_walking with him.
67Therefore the Yaʸsous said to_the twelve:
You_all also are_ not _wanting to_be_going_away?
68Simōn Petros answered to_him:
master, to whom will_we_be_going_away?
You_are_having the_messages eternal of_life.
69And we have_believed and we_have_known that you are the holy one of_ the _god.
70The Yaʸsous answered to_them:
Not I chose you_all the twelve, and one of you_all is a_devil?
71And he_was_speaking the to_Youdas/(Yəhūdāh) of_Simōn of_Iskariōtaʸs, because/for this one one of the twelve was_going to_be_giving_ him _over.
