OET (OET-RV)As they’d crossed over, Eliyah had told Elisha, “Tell me what you’d like me to do for you before I get taken away.”
¶ “Please,” Elisha had answered, “I’d like a double amount of the spirit that you have.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיְהִ֣י

and=he/it_was

See the discussion in the introduction to 2 Kings of how the author also uses the phrase “And it happened” to introduce new developments within events that he is relating in his story. To translate this phrase here and in similar occurrences in the book, use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new development within an event.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

אֶלָּקַ֣ח

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was just,as,they_had_passed_over and,Elijah he/it_had_said to/towards ʼElīshāˊ tell what do for,you before, taken from,with,you and=he/it_said ʼElīshāˊ and=let_it_be now portion_of double in,spirit_of,your to,me )

The expression am taken is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Yahweh takes me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

פִּֽי־שְׁנַ֥יִם בְּרוּחֲךָ֖

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was just,as,they_had_passed_over and,Elijah he/it_had_said to/towards ʼElīshāˊ tell what do for,you before, taken from,with,you and=he/it_said ʼElīshāˊ and=let_it_be now portion_of double in,spirit_of,your to,me )

Elisha is asking Elijah to treat him as if he were his firstborn son. Elisha is alluding to [Deuteronomy 21:17](../../deu/21/17.md), which specified that fathers were to give their firstborn sons twice as much inheritance as their other sons, since the firstborn would need those resources to be the leaders of the next generation. Elisha is aware of his role as Elijah’s appointed successor. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. The UST models one way to do that.
