OET (OET-LV)And he_said:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all that not_one prophet is acceptable in the hometown of_him.

OET (OET-RV)I can assure you all that no prophet is accepted by his own hometown.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:14–30: The people rejected Jesus at Nazareth

In the synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus read a text from Isaiah that refers to the Messiah. Jesus said that what this scripture talked about was happening as he read it. By saying this, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. He used examples from the history of Israel to show that the Israelites did not believe and obey God well. He implied that people from other countries were ready to believe and obey God more than the people of Israel were. So the people of Nazareth tried to kill Jesus, but they could not.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

The People of Nazareth Turn against Jesus (CEV)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth (ESV)

There is a parallel passage for this section in Mark 6:1–6.

4:24a

Then He added, “Truly I tell you,

He added: The Greek word that the BSB translates as He added is literally “he said” (as in the RSV). In 4:23 Jesus said what the people were thinking. In 4:24a, he began to express his response to their thoughts. Because of this, the BSB has translated the Greek word as He added. In some languages, it may be more natural to use a different speech clause. For example:

he continued (NIV)

Then Jesus said (NCV)

Truly I tell you: Jesus often used the words Truly I tell you to introduce a statement that he wanted to emphasize. He wanted people to listen with extra attention. Some other ways to show this emphasis are:

I assure you that (JBP)

I can guarantee this truth (GW)

4:24b

no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

no prophet is accepted in his hometown: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as is accepted means “is welcomed” or “is honored.” The clause no prophet is accepted in his hometown means that people in the town where a prophet grew up generally do not honor him. People find it hard to believe that someone whom they know personally is a prophet from God. Some other ways to translate this are:

prophets are never welcomed in their hometown (GNT)

no prophet is acceptable in his hometown (NET)

no prophets are liked by the people of their own hometown (CEV)

Like the proverb “Physician, heal yourself!” (4:23b), this clause also appears to be a proverb.

no prophet is accepted: This clause is passive. Some ways to translate this are:

prophet: The word prophet also occurs in 4:17a. Translate it the same way in both verses.

uW Translation Notes:

ἀμὴν, λέγω ὑμῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς προφήτης δεκτός ἐστίν ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ)

Jesus uses this phrase to emphasize the truth of the statement that follows. Alternate translation: [What I am about to tell you is very true]

Note 1 topic: writing-proverbs

οὐδεὶς προφήτης δεκτός ἐστιν ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς προφήτης δεκτός ἐστίν ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ)

Jesus makes a short, general statement in order to rebuke the people. This saying expresses a great deal of meaning in a few words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could expand it to make clear to your readers what it means. Alternate translation: [You think you know all about me because I grew up here, and so you could not accept that I am genuinely a prophet]
