OET (OET-RV) However, the people there didn’t welcome them because it was clear that Yeshua was heading to Yerushalem.
Even though the Samaritan people were partly Jewish (2 Kings 17:24–41), they worshiped God differently than the Jews did. Their main place of worship was on Mount Gerazim, while the Jews’ main place of worship was in Jerusalem (John 4:20). The Samaritans did not want Jews to travel through their district on the way to worship in Jerusalem. That is why they rejected Jesus and his disciples.

But the people there refused to welcome Him: The clause But the people there refused to welcome Him probably indicates that the people in that Samaritan village did not accept the messengers whom Jesus had sent on ahead. They told the messengers that they would not offer hospitality to Jesus and his disciples, so the messengers were not able to get things ready. Some other ways to translate this are:

because He was heading for Jerusalem: The clause that the BSB translates as because He was heading for Jerusalem is literally “because his face was set toward Jerusalem.” Several English versions translate the clause that way. The reason why the Samaritan villagers refused to welcome Jesus was that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. The Samaritans worshiped on Mount Gerazim in Samaria. For this reason, they were not friendly towards Jews who went through their territory to worship at the temple in Jerusalem.
The people of the Samaritan village did not personally see Jesus heading toward Jerusalem. This information was probably clear because they heard it from the messengers. For example:

In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of the clauses in these two verse parts so that the reason (9:53b) precedes the result (9:53a). For example:

Luke is using one part of Jesus to represent all of him. Luke may use the face because Jesus was facing in the direction he was traveling. Or this may echo the expression “he set his face” in [9:52](../09/52.md). Alternate translation: [he was traveling toward Jerusalem]

The Samaritans and the Jews hated each other. Therefore the Samaritans did not want to help Jesus travel to Jerusalem, which was the Jewish capital and the place where the Jews held their major religious observances. Alternate translation: [because they did not want to help any Jew make a journey to Jerusalem]
9:52-53 a Samaritan village: Jews and Samaritans had a history of conflict and racial prejudice; they hated each other (see study note on 10:33). The Samaritans, who worshiped on Mount Gerizim, probably assumed that Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem to worship there.
