OET (OET-LV)but which to_sit_down on the_right or on the_left of_me, is not mine to_give, but for_whom it_has_been_prepared.

OET (OET-RV)but as for deciding who will sit next to me, that’s not my decision to make because it’s already been decided.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

τὸ & καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἢ ἐξ εὐωνύμων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τό δέ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μού ἤ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἐστίν ἐμόν δοῦναι ἀλλʼ οἷς ἡτοίμασται)

When someone sits at the right hand or at the left hand of a ruler, this symbolizes that person’s honor, authority, and ability to rule. See how you translated the similar phrases in [10:37](../10/37.md). Alternate translation: [to sit down to rule at my right hand and at my left hand] or [to take the places of honor and authority at my right hand and at my left hand]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἢ ἐξ εὐωνύμων

on ˓the˒_right (Some words not found in SR-GNT: τό δέ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μού ἤ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἐστίν ἐμόν δοῦναι ἀλλʼ οἷς ἡτοίμασται)

Here, the phrases at my right hand and at my left hand refer to the places next to Jesus’ right and left hands, which would be the right side and the left side. In the Jesus’ culture, these sides were associated with honor or authority. See how you expressed the idea in [10:37](../10/37.md). Alternate translation: [next to me on the right or next to me on the left] or [in the honorable places at my right or at my left]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἀλλ’ οἷς

but ˱for˲_whom

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [but it will be given to the ones for whom]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἡτοίμασται

˱it˲_˓has_been˒_prepared

Here, the word it refers to sitting in the places at Jesus’ right and left hand. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [to sit in those places has been prepared] or [it has been prepared to do that]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἡτοίμασται

˱it˲_˓has_been˒_prepared

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, it is clear from the context that it was God. Alternate translation: [God has prepared it]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:40 Whatever James and John would experience, Jesus did not have the authority to grant their request. Only God the Father could (see also 13:32).
