OET (OET-RV) Don’t continue onwards because Yahweh isn’t with you and for sure you’ll all be defeated by your enemies
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
אַֽל־תַּעֲל֔וּ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין יְהוָ֖ה בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם
not go_up that/for/because/then/when not YHWH [will,be]_of,in_your(pl)_midst
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Yahweh is not in your midst, so you shall not go up]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
אַֽל־תַּעֲל֔וּ
not go_up
In keeping with what is usual for his language and culture, Moses is marking travel for change in elevation. If this expression go up contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language, you could shorten it. Alternate translation: [You shall not go]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
אֵ֥ין יְהוָ֖ה בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם
not YHWH [will,be]_of,in_your(pl)_midst
Here, Moses is speaking of Yahweh as if he were physically present among the Israelites. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh is not with you] or [Yahweh will not help you]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ לִפְנֵ֖י אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם
and=not defeated to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before enemies_of,your(pl)
The expression shall not be struck is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and your enemies shall not strike you to their face]
Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ
and=not defeated
The words translated as and introduce what will happen if they do not go up. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a result of what came before. Alternate translation: [and that way you shall not be struck]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ
and=not defeated
The implication is that the Israelites will be defeated in battle by their enemies. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. See the discussion of the term “struck” in the Introduction to Numbers. Alternate translation: [and you shall not be defeated]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
לִפְנֵ֖י אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם
to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before enemies_of,your(pl)
Here, to the face of represents being in front of your enemies. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [before your enemies]
OET (OET-LV) Do_not go_up if/because not YHWH will_be_of_in_your(pl)_midst and_not you(pl)_will_be_defeated to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before enemies_of_your(pl).
OET (OET-RV) Don’t continue onwards because Yahweh isn’t with you and for sure you’ll all be defeated by your enemies
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
