OET (OET-LV) If they_will_see DOM the_earth/land which I_swore to_ancestors_of_their and_all those_of_who_spurned_me not they_will_see_it.
OET (OET-RV) so there’s no way that they’ll enter the land that I promised to their ancestors. All those who despised me won’t get to enter it.
Note 1 topic: writing-oathformula
אִם־יִרְאוּ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָ֑ם
if see DOM the=earth/land which/who swore to,ancestors_of,their
Following the custom of this culture, Yahweh is swearing an oath by stating the first part of a condition (if they see the land that I swore to their fathers) but not the second part (“then”). If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explicitly state the second part of this condition. Alternate translation: [if they see the land that I swore to their fathers, may I strike myself dead]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָ֑ם
which/who swore to,ancestors_of,their
Yahweh is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. See how you translated the similar clause in [verse 16](../14/16.md). Alternate translation: [that I swore to hand over to their fathers]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לַאֲבֹתָ֑ם
to,ancestors_of,their
Yahweh is using the term fathers to mean “ancestors.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to their predecessors]
Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases
וְכָל
and=all
Here the word And introduces a restatement that affirms the oath. If the connection between this statement and the previous one is not clear, you may want to use a different connecting word to show how this statement relates to what comes before it. Alternate translation: [In the end, all]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לֹ֥א יִרְאֽוּהָ
not they,will_see_it
Here, Yahweh is speaking of seeing the land to mean entering and experiencing it personally. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [will not enter it] or [will not live in it]
OET (OET-LV) If they_will_see DOM the_earth/land which I_swore to_ancestors_of_their and_all those_of_who_spurned_me not they_will_see_it.
OET (OET-RV) so there’s no way that they’ll enter the land that I promised to their ancestors. All those who despised me won’t get to enter it.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
