uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

See how you translated this phrase in [2:3](../02/03.md).

Note 3 topic: translate-numbers

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

רִאשֹׁנָ֖ה יִסָּֽעוּ

first set_out

The phrase they will set out first refers to the Israelites journeying from one location to another. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “When traveling to a new location, the camp of Judah will start walking first”

Note 6 topic: translate-ordinal

רִאשֹׁנָ֖ה

first

If your language does not use ordinal numbers, you could use a cardinal number here or an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: “before the other tribes”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:1-34 Israel’s camps were to be organized by tribal groupings. This arrangement may have reflected concerns for social status, access to water, and security for the Tabernacle, which represented the Lord’s presence. The Egyptian army from approximately this same era camped in a similar defensive formation to protect the sacred objects that accompanied their field campaigns.
