TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:4-7 This unexpected detour in the narrative provides an important reminder of Israel’s earlier refusal to believe that God would bring them safely into the land of Canaan (Num 14). This summary of God’s judgment upon their fathers reminded the present generation that trusting in God was still necessary if they were to occupy the land their ancestors had forfeited. Further, it signaled the completion of God’s judgment upon the earlier generation.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

כִּֽי־ מֻלִ֣ים הָי֔וּ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם הַיֹּֽצְאִ֑ים וְכָל־ הָ֠עָם הַיִּלֹּדִ֨ים

that/for/because/then/when circumcised they_were all/each/any/every the,people the,came_out and=all the,people the,born

There is a contrasting relationship between these two clauses. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a connecting word or phrase on the first clause rather than on the second one. Alternate translation: “while all of the people having come out were circumcised, all the people born”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

מֻלִ֣ים הָי֔וּ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם הַיֹּֽצְאִ֑ים

circumcised they_were all/each/any/every the,people the,came_out

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “someone had circumcised all the people who came out”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הָעָ֖ם & הָ֠עָם

the,people & the,people

In this verse, the expression the people means “the males.” If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate that explicitly. Alternate translation: “the males … the males”

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

לֹא־ מָֽלוּ

not circumcised

Here, they is an indefinite pronoun that does not have a specific referent in the immediate context. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this with a different expression that does not use an indefinite pronoun. Alternate translation: “had not been circumcised” or “no one had circumcised”
