Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). 2:18-29 The letter to the church in Thyatira confronts Christians who mix Christianity with pagan practices and a worldly lifestyle.
In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Thyatira. He saw that they had grown in their faith. Jesus warned them about allowing an immoral woman named Jezebel to remain among them. He encouraged the believers who had not followed Jezebel’s sinful teachings to remain faithful. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.

Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness,
Look, I am throwing her on a bed of pain,
Indeed/Hey, I will now cause her to suffer physically.
Behold: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Behold is literally “look.” The word emphasizes or calls attention to the words that follow. This word is not a command to look at something.
If you have a word or phrase with that meaning, you may want to use it here. Some examples are:
Look, (NJB)
Beware, (NRSV)
Indeed/Hey,
I will cast her onto a bed of sickness: The Greek clause is literally “I am throwing her on a bed.” It is probably a Hebrew idiom that means “I will now cause her to become sick/ill.” The BSB adds the words of sickness in order to indicate this meaning. Other ways to translate this clause are:
I will throw her on a sickbed (RSV)
I will cause her to become so ill that she cannot get out of bed
In some languages a literal translation would not have the correct meaning. If that is true in your language, translate the meaning of the idiom. For example:
I will cause her body to suffer
I will cast: The Greek grammar here is the present tense. Here the present tense indicates “immediately” or “as I speak.”
and those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation
and those who commit adultery with her, into great distress,
And I will now cause her partners in adultery to undergo a severe ordeal/hardship,
those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation: The Greek words are literally “those who commit adultery with her into great suffering.” The main verb is from 2:22a—“I will cast.” Other ways to translate this clause are:
all her partners in adultery to great hardship (NJB)
those who committed adultery with her will suffer terribly (GNT)
those who commit adultery with her I am throwing into great distress (NRSV)
commit adultery: This phrase refers to sexual immorality of all kinds. It has the same meaning as “commit sexual immorality” in 2:14e.
unless they repent of her deeds.
unless they repent of her practices.
unless they stop sinning, change their thinking, and stop following her teachings.
unless they repent of her deeds: There are two issues here.
Issue 1—The Greek text
There is a textual issue here:
The earliest Greek manuscripts have her. For example:
her (GNT) (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, REB, ESV, NCV)
Some later Greek manuscripts have their. For example:
their (KJV) (KJV, NJB)
It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT 4 apparatus recommends it.
This phrase indicates that the people were acting the same as the woman. In some languages it is not possible to say that people must repent of someone else’s deeds. In some languages it is more natural to refer to doing the same things. For example:
repent and stop acting as she does
Issue 2—Meaning
This phrase indicates that if these people repented, then they would not have to suffer. If they stopped committing adultery and eating food sacrificed to idols, God would forgive them. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
if they do not turn away from the wrongs she does (NCV)
unless they repent and turn away from her evil deeds (NLT)
The cause (2:22c) is stated after the consequence (2:22b). In some languages it is more natural to have the cause first. For example:
22cUnless they repent of her deeds, 22bthose who commit adultery with her suffer great tribulation.
22cIf they do not repent of her deeds, 22bthose who commit adultery with her suffer great tribulation.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
βάλλω αὐτὴν εἰς κλίνην
˱I˲_˓am˒_casting (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἰδού βάλλω αὐτήν εἰς κλίνην καί τούς μοιχεύοντας μετʼ αὐτῆς εἰς θλῖψιν μεγάλην ἐάν μή μετανοήσουσιν ἐκ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῆς)
Jesus is referring to punishing Jezebel with sickness by association with the bed that she would have to lie on because she was sick. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I will punish her by making her gravely ill]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
τοὺς μοιχεύοντας μετ’ αὐτῆς εἰς θλῖψιν μεγάλην
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἰδού βάλλω αὐτήν εἰς κλίνην καί τούς μοιχεύοντας μετʼ αὐτῆς εἰς θλῖψιν μεγάλην ἐάν μή μετανοήσουσιν ἐκ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῆς)
Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [I will throw the ones committing adultery with her into great tribulation]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
τοὺς μοιχεύοντας μετ’ αὐτῆς εἰς θλῖψιν μεγάλην
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἰδού βάλλω αὐτήν εἰς κλίνην καί τούς μοιχεύοντας μετʼ αὐτῆς εἰς θλῖψιν μεγάλην ἐάν μή μετανοήσουσιν ἐκ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῆς)
Jesus does not mean that he will literally throw the disobedient believers in Thyatira into tribulation. That is, he will not pick them up and heave them through the air. Alternate translation: [I will cause the ones committing adultery with her to experience great tribulation]
