SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:18–29: Jesus spoke to the church at Thyatira

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Thyatira. He saw that they had grown in their faith. Jesus warned them about allowing an immoral woman named Jezebel to remain among them. He encouraged the believers who had not followed Jezebel’s sinful teachings to remain faithful. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.

Translate this heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.

2:28

And I will give him the morning star.

And I will give him the morning star: This statement tells the second thing that Jesus will give those who overcome and do his will until the end (2:26).

In some languages the person to whom the pronoun him refers will not be clear. If this is true in your language, you may want to clearly refer to the people who overcome. For example:

And I will also give to him who overcomes and does my will to the end the morning star

And I will also give the morning star to that overcomer/victor

And I will also give the morning star to those overcomers/victors

the morning star: This is a symbol, but there are several ways to interpret its symbolic meaning. It may symbolically refer to:

  1. A share in the status and authority of Christ.Aune, Smalley.

  2. Victory or messianic reign.Beale, Osbourne, Kistemaker.

  3. Honor or glory.Kistemaker, Beckwith, Lenski, Hughes.

  4. The presence of Christ.Charles, Hughes, Johnson (he adds that it may refer to the Resurrection).

No interpretation is clearly best. So you should translate this phrase literally. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the star of dawn (REB)

the pre-dawn star

You may then want to include a footnote to explain the symbolic meaning. An example footnote is:

The morning star might be symbolic of victory or honor or the presence of Christ.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ὡς κἀγὼ εἴληφα

as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὡς κἀγώ εἴληφα παρά τοῦ πατρός μού καί δώσω αὐτῷ τόν ἀστέρα τόν πρωϊνόν)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [as I also have received authority]

Note 2 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

τοῦ πατρός μου

the father (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὡς κἀγώ εἴληφα παρά τοῦ πατρός μού καί δώσω αὐτῷ τόν ἀστέρα τόν πρωϊνόν)

Father is an important title that describes the relationship between God and Jesus. Be sure to retain this title in your translation.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὸν ἀστέρα τὸν πρωϊνόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὡς κἀγώ εἴληφα παρά τοῦ πατρός μού καί δώσω αὐτῷ τόν ἀστέρα τόν πρωϊνόν)

Jesus is speaking as if he will literally give the faithful believers in Thyatira the morning star. This could mean: (1) confident hope about the future, just as the appearance of the morning star (that is, the planet Venus) shows that a new day is about to begin. (2) a deep and meaningful relationship with Jesus, who says in [22:16](../01/01.md), “I am … the bright morning star.” You could say either of these things in your translation. The UST models one way to express the first possibility. However, since this image recurs later in the book, you may wish to retain it here by translating the phrase the morning star directly.
