OET (OET-RV) But I do have a few things against you: you have some people there who hold to the ancient prophet Balaam’s teaching. He taught Moab’s king, Balak, how to tempt the Israelis and to eat food that had been sacrificed to idols, and to be sexually immoral.

ULT But I have a few things against you, that you have there ones holding the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to throw a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat idol-offerings and to be sexually immoral.
UST Nevertheless, I must criticize you about a few things. Some people in your group firmly believe that they should do what the ancient prophet Balaam taught. It was Balaam who showed Balak, the king of Moab, how to tempt the people of Israel to sin. Balak led the Israelites to eat meat that people had sacrificed to idols. Balak also led the Israelites to commit sexual sins.
BSB ¶ But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.
BLB But I have a few things against you, because you have some there holding the teaching of Balaam, who would teach Balak to cast a snare before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.
AICNT But I have this against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught [Balak][fn] to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat food sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.[fn]
2:14, Balak: Absent from ℵ(01).
2:14, immorality: Or fornication as in breaking covenant by assimilating with fallen culture. The Greek word means (1) to engage in sexual immorality, engage in illicit sex, to fornicate, to whore, or (2) engagement in polytheistic cult, fornicate. (BDAG, πορνεύω)
OEB Yet I have a few things against you – You have among you those who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put temptations in the way of the Israelites, so that they should eat idol-offerings and commit licentious acts.
WEBBE But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to throw a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.

T4T Nevertheless, I have this complaint against you: You permit some of your members to teach things like Balaam taught long ago. He taught Balak to persuade the Israeli people to sin. Specifically, he taught them to eat food that had been offered to idols, and to practice sexual immorality.
LEB But I have a few things against you: that you have there those who hold fast to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat food sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.
BBE But I have some things against you, because you have with you those who keep the teaching of Balaam, by whose suggestion Balak made the children of Israel go out of the right way, taking food which was offered to false gods, and going after the desires of the flesh.

2:12-17 The letter to the church in Pergamum portrays Christians who are tempted to compromise their morality and their loyalty to God. The city of Pergamum was the earliest capital of the Roman province of Asia. It contained a famous library, and its citizens developed the use of animal skins as writing materials.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἔχω κατὰ σοῦ ὀλίγα
˱I˲_/am/_having against you /a/_few_‹things›
See how you translated the similar phrase in 2:4.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
κρατοῦντας τὴν διδαχὴν Βαλαάμ
taking_hold_of the teaching ˱of˲_Balaam
Jesus is speaking as if the believers in Pergamum were literally holding the teaching of Balaam. He means that they are doing what this teaching instructs them to do. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “people who are obeying the teaching of Balaam”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
κρατοῦντας τὴν διδαχὴν Βαλαάμ
taking_hold_of the teaching ˱of˲_Balaam
Jesus is referring to teaching that condones practicing sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols by association with the way that Balaam advised Balak to get the Israelites to do those things. (See the discussion in the General Notes to this chapter.) If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “people who teach the same things that Balaam did”
Note 4 topic: translate-names
Βαλαάμ & τῷ Βαλὰκ
˱of˲_Balaam & ¬the ˱to˲_Balak
The words Balaam and Balak are the names of men. Their story is told in Numbers 22:1-24:45. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could identify them further in your translation. Alternate translation: “of the ancient prophet Balaam … Balak, the king of Moab,”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
βαλεῖν σκάνδαλον ἐνώπιον τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, φαγεῖν εἰδωλόθυτα καὶ πορνεῦσαι
/to/_cast /a/_temptation before the sons ˱of˲_Israel /to/_eat idol_sacrificed_‹things› and /to/_commit_sexual_immorality
Jesus is speaking as if Balak had literally thrown a stumbling block, something that would make people trip and fall, in front of the Israelites. He means that Balaak tempted them and got them to sin. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “how to tempt the sons of Israel into sinning by eating food sacrificed to idols and being sexually immoral”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ
the sons ˱of˲_Israel
Here, sons figuratively means “descendants.” Jesus is identifying the Israelites as descendants of their ancestor Israel (who was also known as Jacob). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the people of Israel”
Note 7 topic: translate-unknown
εἰδωλόθυτα
idol_sacrificed_‹things›
The word translated idol-food describes food that was offered to idols. People then often ate this food as a way of worshiping the idols. Alternate translation: “food sacrificed to idols”
