2:24 The depths of Satan might be a striking reference to the Gnostic god named “Depth” (Bythos), who with his partner “Silence” (Sigē) formed a philosophic godhead. Gnosticism placed great emphasis on secret knowledge.
The Purpose of the Judgments
What is the purpose of God’s judgments? Are they meant to bring about redemption or are they simply intended to destroy? The account of judgments in Revelation gives us some clues:
Even though God has made it clear that sin is wrong and judgment is coming (Rom 2:5-11), many people still refuse to repent and accept God’s grace (Rom 1:32). Even in the final days, when God sends his witnesses to prophesy concerning the coming destruction, many people will prefer to align themselves with evil forces and will gloat over the demise of God’s prophets (11:3-10). Those who thus oppose God and flee from him will eventually be excluded from his presence.
Judgment against disobedience and evil ways is inevitable (see Rom 1:18–2:11). Yet God patiently waits for repentance and offers his grace (see Rom 2:4; 2 Pet 3:8-10). As such, the warnings of these judgments can serve as an opportunity for change.

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Thyatira. He saw that they had grown in their faith. Jesus warned them about allowing an immoral woman named Jezebel to remain among them. He encouraged the believers who had not followed Jezebel’s sinful teachings to remain faithful. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.
Translate this heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.
But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira,
¶ But I say to the rest of you believers in Thyatira,
But I say: In this paragraph Jesus continued to speak. This should be clear to readers and listeners because no one else has been speaking.
In some languages it is more natural to begin a new paragraph by indicating who is speaking. For example:
Jesus continued, “But I say….”
But: The Greek word here is often translated as “and” or “but.” Some English versions, such as the NIV, translate the Greek word here with the English word “now” to introduce what follows.
There is contrast between what Jesus would do with Jezebel and her followers (2:22–23) and how he encourages the other believers in Thyatira (2:24–28). This is why the BSB and some other English versions translate the Greek word here as But. For example:
But (RSV, ESV)
the rest of you: This phrase refers to the believers in Thyatira who did not follow Jezebel. They were faithful to Jesus.
who do not hold to her teaching
all who do not obey/accept her teaching
that is, to all of you who have rejected her teaching
who do not hold to her teaching: The Greek clause is literally “as many as do not have this teaching.” It refers to the people in 2:24a (“the rest of you in Thyatira”). It further describes some of those in Thyatira. Other ways to translate this clause are:
all who do not accept this teaching (REB)
that is, all of you who have not followed her teaching
hold: Here the word hold means “follow” or “obey.” The REB translates it as:
accept
her teaching: The pronoun her refers to the false teacher called Jezebel.
and have not learned the so-called deep things of Satan:
and who do not know the deep secrets of Satan, as they are called,
and who have not learned what some people call the very secret things/knowledge of Satan,
and have not learned: This clause tells the reader more about the believers mentioned in 2:24a (“the rest of you in Thyatira”). Other ways to translate this clause are:
who have not learned (RSV)
or learnt (NJB)
learned: The Greek word is literally “know.” But many English versions refer to learning the secrets.
the so-called deep things of Satan: The Greek phrase here is literally “as they say the deep things of Satan.”
There are two ways to interpret who “they” refers to:
It refers to the followers of Jezebel. For example, the CEV says:
what her followers call the “deep secrets of Satan.” (GNT, NASB, KJV, NLT, CEV, REB)
It refers to people in general. For example:
what some call the deep things of Satan (RSV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NJB, ESV, NABRE, NET, GW, NCV)“Some” could refer to the followers of Jezebel in an indirect way. But at first glance it seems to refer to other people in a general way.
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because “they say” seems to connect to “they” in 2:22.It is hard to tell from the context which group “they say” refers to. Beale, Lenski, Osbourne, Smalley, Barnett, and Charles support interpretation (1). But Aune, Johnson, and Mounce support interpretation (2). But if the major language version supports interpretation (2), you may want to follow that.
deep things: The secrets are figuratively called deep because they are well hidden and difficult to discover. The phrase refers to secret knowledge or practices. It refers to the immoral practices described in 2:20d–e as well as other secrets not described here.
I will place no further burden upon you.
I will not put any other burden/load on you.
I will not add any command for you to obey.
I will place no further burden upon you: This statement is probably what Jesus said (2:24a) to the believers who have not followed Jezebel. For example:
But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay upon you any other burden (RSV)
Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you (NIV2011)
The word burden refers figuratively to something that is difficult to do. This statement indicates that Jesus would not command the faithful believers to do anything else that was difficult. The several ways to translate this clause are:
Keep the figure of speech. For example:
I will not put any other load on you. (NCV)
Keep the figure of speech and explain its meaning in your translation. For example:
So I won’t burden you down with any other commands. (CEV)
Translate the meaning without the figure of speech. For example:
I will ask nothing more of you (NLT)
I will not give to you any other difficult command
no further burden: The phrase no further refers to additional burdens other than those of 2:22–23.
(reordered) ¶ Now to the rest of you believers in Thyatira, all who do not obey/accept her teaching and who do not know the deep secrets of Satan, as they are called, I say, ‘I will not put any other burden/load on you.’
(reordered) ¶ But to the rest of you believers in Thyatira, that is, to all of you who have rejected her teaching and who have not learned what some people call the very secret things/knowledge of Satan, I say that I will not add any command for you to obey.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular
ὑμῖν & ὑμᾶς
˱to˲_you_all & you_all
The word you is plural in these instances. Jesus is speaking more directly to the faithful believers in Thyatira in order to encourage them. You may consider using the plural form of “you” here if that would be natural in your language.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τὰ βαθέα τοῦ Σατανᾶ, ὡς λέγουσιν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμῖν Δέ λέγω τοῖς λοιποῖς τοῖς ἐν Θυατείροις ὅσοι οὐκ ἔχουσιν τήν διδαχήν ταύτην οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τά βαθέα τοῦ Σατανᾶ ὡς λέγουσιν οὒ βάλλω ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος)
The people Jesus is quoting have been using the adjective deep as a noun to mean a certain kind of thing. The adjective is plural, and the ULT adds the word things to show this. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate this word with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [the things pertaining to Satan that they call deep]
Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns
ὡς λέγουσιν
as ˱they˲_˓are˒_saying
The pronoun they is an indefinite pronoun that does not have a specific referent in the immediate context. Jesus is using this indefinite construction to focus on what is being said rather than on who is saying it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this with a different expression that does not use an indefinite pronoun. Alternate translation: [as the people who do hold this teaching call them]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
οὐ βάλλω ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμῖν Δέ λέγω τοῖς λοιποῖς τοῖς ἐν Θυατείροις ὅσοι οὐκ ἔχουσιν τήν διδαχήν ταύτην οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τά βαθέα τοῦ Σατανᾶ ὡς λέγουσιν οὒ βάλλω ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος)
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [that I do not put another burden on you]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives
οὐ βάλλω ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμῖν Δέ λέγω τοῖς λοιποῖς τοῖς ἐν Θυατείροις ὅσοι οὐκ ἔχουσιν τήν διδαχήν ταύτην οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τά βαθέα τοῦ Σατανᾶ ὡς λέγουσιν οὒ βάλλω ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος)
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this as a positive statement. Alternate translation: [I put only this one burden on you]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
οὐ βάλλω ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμῖν Δέ λέγω τοῖς λοιποῖς τοῖς ἐν Θυατείροις ὅσοι οὐκ ἔχουσιν τήν διδαχήν ταύτην οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τά βαθέα τοῦ Σατανᾶ ὡς λέγουσιν οὒ βάλλω ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἄλλο βάρος)
Jesus is speaking as if he might literally put a burden on the believers in Thyatira. He is referring to something he might require of them. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I do not require anything else of you]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἄλλο βάρος
another burden
By another burden, Jesus means implicitly no burden other than the one he is about to mention. You can indicate this in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [any burden on you other than the following:]
